WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some area Boy Scouts are earning new badges to put on their uniforms by attending a Merit Badge College this weekend.

Hosted by the Wilmington Fire Department and Fire Explorers, it’s a way for scouts to get hands-on experience and earn a Fire Safety badge as well as a First Aid badge.

“It’s just like the Scout motto: ‘Be prepared,’” said 17-year-old Robert Perry. “You have to be prepared for everything. We just like to be ready for everything that comes along.”

Perry is part of Troop 274 and has been a scout since he was six. He came to Saturday’s session to earn his Fire Safety badge. The boys learned about the different fire trucks, escape routes and even got to see the jaws of life.

The First Aid session is Sunday.
