Tense Police standoff has safe ending

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It was a tense scene in Wilmington for several hours as police were involved in a standoff near Greenfield Lake.

Police say it all began as a domestic assault and escalated from there. Investigators say a woman was assaulted at a home on 1314 South 7th Street. She was transported to the hospital.

Police responded just after 4 p.m. Thursday to investigate and found 66-year-old James Hall inside the home. Hall would not communicate with negotiators so they had to go a different route.

"We tried repeatedly to make contact with the subject inside with negative contact we decided to move on and breach the front door and send our robot in, when we established when we were able to contact the individual we made voice contact with the individual inside," Wilmington Police Captain Jim Varrone said.

SWAT took Hall into custody around 9 p.m. Hall will face charges of assault and communicating threats.
