RALEIGH, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -– A majority, 64 percent, of North Carolina voters say they support a constitutional amendment that establishes marriage between one man and woman as the only recognized domestic legal union in the state.

Sixty-four percent of respondents said they support a constitutional amendment that says marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in the state. Thirty percent said they oppose it and six percent are undecided or do not know.

While Black voters continue to strongly back the marriage amendment by a 40% margin the biggest move this month over last was the move of unaffiliated voters from a plus 11 percent margin in January to a plus 24 percent margin in February in support of the marriage amendment.

When asked a follow up question concerning a lawsuit filed by the Guilford County Register of Deeds seeking to declare North Carolina’s current marriage law unconstitutional, sixty percent of respondents said that would make them more likely to support the Amendment, which includes twenty percent of those who say they opposed the amendment when first asked.

“The amendment continues to hold broad support among almost all groups,” said Civitas Institute President Francis De Luca. “If the Guilford County lawsuit becomes part of the amendment campaign story it could potentially increase the winning margin for the amendment,” concluded De Luca.

“A lawsuit was filed recently by the elected Guilford (GILL-ford) County Register of Deeds that

seeks to declare North Carolina marriage laws unconstitutional, because they don’t allow same

gender partners to marry.

However, there is a proposed marriage amendment that would protect traditional marriage from

suits like this. The proposed amendment would prevent a judge from declaring marriage as only

between one man and one woman as unconstitutional.

With that information, would you be more likely or less likely to support the marriage

amendment that would protect traditional marriage?”

    Once again the republicans have raised an issue that has nothing to do with anything. Will this create jobs in NC? No. Will it put more money in the state’s coffers? No. Will it provide health care for the people in this state that can’t afford it? No. Do not try to disenfranchise a select group of people from their rights as Americans. You can’t legislate morality, so don’t even try.

    For all my fellow Christian heterosexuals, take the time to READ the amendment. It basically says that gays and Lesbians will be denied basic rights that you enjoy, something as simple as filing joint taxes or making your final arrangements when you die.

    This is not Northwestern Pakistan and religion is not the highest law of the land here. People who violate or don’t accept the Bible are still legally entitled to the exact same rights and benefits under law as you or I are.

    Simplest solution? Get the state OUT of the marriage business. Every couple, regardless of gender mix, registers a domestic partnership entitling to all legal rights currently associated with marriage.

    Then heterosexuals go see their minister, priest, rabbi, or imam to get married. Gays and Lesbians can go to one of those churches where the minister doesn’t accept the Bible as the word of God, and get “married” or even easier, simply say “Who cares” once they attain the rights they deserve under the Constitution.

    ….why don’t you let the good Lord deal with anyone who loves and chooses to marry someone of the same sex? honestly, at the end of the day – why do you care? how does it impact your life? do you not think that gay people get up and go to work and also do things like you do such as pay taxes and exist in communities where they support businesses, have families, etc? at the end of the day – why do you really care about who it is that someone else loves? My God is loving; I don’t recognize yours.

    The problem, Guest444, with due respect to you is that neither you nor I have a right under our Constitution to deny or withhold the civil rights of any group.

    Your right to live as a Christian is not in any way superior to the rights of a Hindu, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist or even an athiest to live and breathe as Americans.

    Gays pursuing their civil rights, most particularly in areas of property and health care concerns really do not harm Christians.

    Let’s be more worried about the taking away of Christian rights in the public square by non Christian activists than a small segment of our population seeking relationship equality. Christians need to focus their energy on why half of the marriages between a man and a woman fail.

    Christ’s Great Commission is to go and teach all nations. I don’t find hijacking the civil political process anywhere in Christ’s commands.

  • The Amendment One Reads: “[ ] FOR [ ] AGAINST
    Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”
    This will not truly defend marriage but it will take away heterosexual domestic partner abuse protection currently being provided by law, take away domestic partner benefits being provided by many local governments, universities and companies in North Carolina. It will also take away benefits of children in single parent homes. Why, because “…the only domestic union…” that is valid is between a man and woman only. Therefore a single parent or domestic partners with children will have not benefits or legal protection.
    This amendment was evil from its conception as it was targeted at same gender legal unions. Why evil, because it was meant to deny a certain group the same benefits that the people who proposed and supported the amendment have and including the Brunswick and Wake County Commissioners who are imposing their bigoted value view of life onto others.
    The framers of this country’s constitution stated explicitly, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
    Roman Catholic Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain said “…only the union of a man and a woman can generate new life, no other human relationship is its equivalent.” I believe that any intelligent person is quite aware of this. Explain how same gender unions would ever interfere with the procreation system. In your heart you know that there is no threat to the institution of marriage by Gays and Lesbians civil unions. In fact by coercing these people into a heterosexual marriage that will inevitable lead to divorce and many times with children involved makes a mockery of the marriage you claim to protect with this evil amendment. There are many cases on the books of such marriages for convenience. e.g. Ted Haggard and Senator Larry Craig. And there are thousands heterosexuals who have married many of times with many devoices and adultery; Such as Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh.
    Gays and Lesbians are entitled by divine and constitutional law to have the same rights as you, no more, no less.
    Don’t send a message to bigots that it is OK to bully and kill people who might be Gay or send North Carolina mentality back to the Dark or Stone Age by passing Amendment One.
    “Stand on the Side of Love” and vote against Amendment One and truly protect marriage, family, children and the prosperity of North Carolina.

    The problem, Guest444, is that like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Toothfairy, not all of us believe in your “Lord Jesus” or his alleged “Instruction.” And we don’t much care whether you approve or understand, just grant all Americans equal rights under the law.

    And again, it’s just a way for the politicians to trick us by raising an issue that won’t help America get back on her feet. We already HAVE such a law in place anyway.

    Well said, if Republicans could stop messing with reproductive rights and gay marriage they would sound a lot more sane. However, they say in one aspect “FREEDOM” and in another “BIBLE”. It’s pretty hypocritcal to say Less government, more freedom, constitution blah blah blah, then in another breath they say “Abortions are wrong..” & “Marriage is only a man an a woman…”.

    The same thing was done to African Americans, women, the japanese. When will paranoid conservatives stop? I hope soon or I hope they stop reproducing other paranoid conservatives.
