WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County will hold a telethon later this month to help wipe the slate clean for hundreds of households without water service due to nonpayment and additional fees. The Help2Others campaign will feature a day long telethon at the New Hanover County Government Center on Saturday, March 24.

“This isn’t just an economic issue for those residents who have found themselves in this situation,” said County Commissioner and CFPUA Board member Rick Catlin. “It’s a public health issue when you consider the numbers of children and elderly who are suffering without running water.”

A committee of New Hanover County employees has been dedicated to developing a long-term solution for homes without running water since January. The telethon, to be carried live on the county’s cable access television channels, will feature musical acts and other family-oriented entertainment inside and outside the New Hanover County Government Center. The telethon will air from noon until 5 p.m. on Time Warner Cable channel 13 and Charter Cable channel 5.

The county says the telethon will focus on the public health issues surrounding the lack of water to the home.

Money raised through the telethon will go into an escrow account, which can only be tapped by County Commissioners. The funds will be disbursed through local nonprofit agencies to those who meet certain eligibility guidelines.

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority’s latest figures show more than 300 households currently without service water and sewer service. County officials say with the large list of water and sewer infrastructure needs, that figure could continue to increase.

In addition to musical entertainment, visitors to the county government center during the telethon will be treated to children’s activities, displays and other goodies donated by local merchants.

The county commissioners need to ensure that 100% of the funds are disbursed by the nonprofits to cover water bills. None should go to administrative costs. Also, the commissioners should ensure that any penalties, late fees, disconnect or reconnect fees are waived by CFPUA.

This is just an opportunity for Rick Catlin to give himself a photo op in his perpetual bid for higher office.

Perhaps he should focus on how to get the evil, succubus, horny females of New Hanover County to stop having dirty sex which requires contraception instead of dialing for votes – I mean dollars.

Does anyone find it odd that a commissioner sits on CFPUA’s board…and now New Hanover County employees are being asked to help with this marathon in the form of donating time and their own money to help CFPUA collect on outstanding accounts??

The people who are getting their bills paid already thru “charity” know that if they go to Social Services for help in getting a bill paid, the person will pay their non-essential bills, such as: cable, internet, and telephone bills, and wait for the essential bills for electricty, natural/propane gas, and water to be under threat of disconnection for non-payment, then they will come in to DSS to get their bills paid for by county programs, state programs, Progress Energy programs, etc…..I don’t mind helping someone who comes into hard times, and is making an honest effort to pay their bills, but others know how to work the system, and they work it to the max!

I hope this is going to be on a case by case basis. I hope all the people are vetted to make sure they are really in need and not just ditching their water bills so they can have fancy cellphones and gold teeth.
