WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some UNC Wilmington students put the idea of turning trash into treasure into practice today.

Students worked together to build palm trees out of recyclable materials found around campus. The campus dining collected boxes, can lids and two-liter soda bottles to construct the trees.

Students heading to lunch were encouraged to help with the project and learn about sustainability in the process.

“They’re here to do the event to help promote awareness for Recyclemania, which takes place now until the end of the month, and what Recyclemania is, it’s an international competition between about 500 schools to basically see how much we can recycle during this time,” UNCW Residence Coordinator Justin Wojicki said.

Progress is ranked in different categories, including paper, cardboard and waste minimization. UNCW finished second in the CAA last year.

It is surprising to see people upset about this!
Really?! The organization that put this on wanted to encourage and inform college students about the importance of recycling. Which, most people here don’t recycle at all and don’t understand why they should.
An event creating awareness about something that should be commonplace is always a good thing. I applaud them for this.
No one mentions the millions they spend on other petty things like the new brick entry signs, just the $0 they spent on an art project.

…to learn this kind of CRAP?

Here’s a quick, FREE class on recycling – pick up aluminum cans on the side of the road, fill a few large trash bags, drive over to Horton’s Metals on 421, and make a few bucks.

After paying more than $20k with loans you must pay for and can never get away from w/o paying. All you end up with is a useless arts degree, maybe then they can use this experience for their future field of work.

Janitor, Sanitation Worker, House Cleaning, Activist Saying they Deserve More while being homeless oh oh I mean “occupier”. They really will be great contributors for America’s Prosperity.

their parents are proud to see their hard-earned tuition dollars being used this way. “What did you do today in school honey” “We built palm trees out of recycled trash”. High-priced arts & crafts.

I agree with the first comment. UNCW is notorious for wasting students time and money. What a useless waste of what could have been used for something better. I’m sure the campus looks like a landfill for palm trees.

They can take the metal cans and make cymbals to go along with the plastic 5 gallon buckets they bang on as a drum.
