High schoolers kick butts out of the park

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Students from all over the Cape Fear came together to kick butts out of the park Saturday; cigarette butts, that is.

Tobacco Reality Unfiltered, or TRU, groups from several area high schools picked up hundreds of cigarette butts in Empie Park. The group's mission is to help smokers quit and to prevent people from ever picking up the habit.

"We are the next generation, and we're next to take the place of the people who are about to retire, so we might as well make the world a better place and much healthier,” TRU student Christian Kittrell said. “Instead of having all the cancer and all the other health issues out there."

Kittrell is passionate about keeping butts out of parks and hands because his grandmother is the victim of smoking-related health issues.

The group's funding has been significantly cut by the state, so they must reapply for a grant and prove their impact and importance.
