WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Parents worried about their child’s safety at school can now get school lockdown alerts via Twitter or text message.

New Hanover County Emergency Management and 911 Communications is partnering with New Hanover County Schools to post information about school lockdowns at @NHC911Lockdown through an automated process with the County’s computer aided dispatch system.

“This service will enhance our notification ability to people who are near a public school of the lockdown,” New Hanover Co. Emergency Management Director Warren Lee said. “Although most lockdown scenarios are precautionary, we’ve received requests from private schools and daycares asking to be notified.”

To receive school lockdown notifications, Twitter users may follow @NHC911Lockdown, and non-Twitter users may text “follow @NHC911Lockdown” to 40404. Subscribers will receive a “cancel” notification when officials have lifted the lockdown. Standard text messaging and/or data rates may apply.

The new Twitter account joins @NHC911, which provides real time updates on traffic related incidents.
