WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An Ashley High School teachers assistant is out of jail after being charged with indecent liberties with a 17-year-old girl. He’s the second TA at a New Hanover County High School charged with a crime against a student this month.

“We hate that this occurred. We hate whenever this occurs, but we’ll react very strongly to it, and quickly to make sure our students are safe,” said Dr. John Welmers, New Hanover Co. Schools Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources.

Dishon Tamere White, 26, turned himself into New Hanover County Sheriff’s detectives Tuesday night after being charged with taking indecent liberties with a 17-year-old girl, who investigators say is a student at Ashley High School.

White, who is a teachers assistant at Ashley, also helped start Wilmington’s first United Youth football team the Wilmington Bulldogs, according to Facebook.

Parents of students at Ashley say they are concerned about what happened.

“I’m sure this is not the first, and I’m sure it won’t be the last, unfortunately,” Leah Lyde said. “I think overall they’re doing a good job in handling the situation.”

New Hanover County Schools says that although this is the second incident involving a teachers assistant this month, they do not see it becoming a pattern.

“We understand the connection in time between these two events, but when you look at the big picture of 25,000 students and 4,000 employees and what goes on, our kids are safe at school, our students are safe in their buildings,” Dr. Welmers said.

Lyde, who has a child who had White as a teacher, says this incident and others like it make an impact on students.

“It’s still kind of a concern like, ‘Wow this is one of my teachers. This could really happen.’ It really hits home,” she said.

This is not the first incident of its kind at Ashley. Two years ago assistant soccer coach Brian Reardon was convicted of having sex with a student.

Tell that to the victims parents. The school’s talking head acts like it is an acceptable number of crimes.

There are 300 million people in the US and 50,000 die every year in a car crash. Are cars safe? Should everyone be concerned when traveling on a roadway to be sure everything is safe?

Gang violence, bullying, a dead 8 year old, teachers beating up kids and raping them…. what sort of track record do other counties have? Outrageous.

I guess the school board wants us to believe its’ press release, rather than what we’re seeing with our own eyes.

Maybe the penalties need to be stiffer to deter this kind of thing.

With guns, it’s always more gun control.

Maybe we need more teacher control.
Reduce the teachers out on the street.
Make it harder for criminals to be teachers.
Maybe have a 2 year “waiting period” before a teacher can be hired.
Dna samples from all teachers with fingerprints.
Ankle bracelet monitoring with gps reports.

Something needs to be done, it’s getting more prevalent.

When u have sex with a student it is rape. Thee have been two teachers arrested in the past couple of years charged with rape. There are all degrees of rape. Rape is not always an act of force.

I would love to know exactly what.thus teacher did. Was what he did illegal b/c he is a teacher and she is a student or would have it been illegal anyway? Was it just comments that were made and if so did ahead ever tell hum to stop…or did he actually touch her in some way? Was this a mutual exchange b/n two people or was it all unwanted…or was it mutual until the girl go mad at the teacher so she Ian getting back at him?

I would like to know what the county’s policy is for using a county computer to post on this website while on the clock? I thought you already got into trouble for that???

The detective felt that the teacher committed a felony and had a warrant drawn up from the evidence he had collected against White. What you want to know is how to get this predator his job back, or at least respect from ignorant people like you.

He was pulled into Dave Spencers office at Hoggard for being too close with female students. So to answer your question, he was told to stop multiple times. How he was employed in a school system, is beyond me.

What are the facts… Is he a fresh, horny young man that got caught up in the moment? Is he a victim? Is SHE a fresh horny young girl? Is she an innocent young lady? Is she a victim? Should he had made a better decision? Should she had been doing her work instead of being a horny little high school student and trying to be grown? Was he her first sexual encounter?

This why I say TEACHER’s and TEACHER’s Assistant need to go BACK to being TEACHER’s not a FRIEND.. The state need to stop testing teaching and let the TEACHER’s be TEACHER’s. There is too much playing and friendship in the schools today and NO RESPECT.

Being he was the adult between the two if indeed these allegations are found to be fact. Mr. White needs to examine himself as an adult trusted with the safety of peoples children. Parents don’t send their children to school with the intention of being preyed on by manipulating child predators. Those who choose to teach take on a moral contract to mold develop and protect these young impressionable minds. In that undertaking as an educator there is nothing that makes it acceptable to engage in inappropriate behavior between an adult “educator” and their underage students.
