NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department says two Laney High School students were arrested Friday for bringing guns on school property.

Sgt. Jerry Brewer says Thomas Lloyd Kimball III and Richard Blake Sutherland had been skeet shooting and returned to campus to pick up their girlfriends when a school resource officer asked to see what they had in their vehicle. He says they were both very cooperative.

Here’s the news release from the sheriff’s department:

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two Laney High School students for possession of a firearm on school property late Friday afternoon. Thomas Lloyd Kimball III, an eighteen year old white male, and Richard Blake Sutherland, a seventeen year old white male, were both charged for possession of a firearm on school property after being stopped by the School Resource Officer and the principal for driving erratically on campus. Kimball was also charged with misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia and possession of less than a half of an ounce of marijuana. Both suspects were arrested and taken before the magistrate where Kimball was given an unsecured bond of $15,000.00 and released and Sutherland was given an unsecured bond of $10,000.00 and released to his parent.

every person on this page is talkin out their tailholes except for the only few who really knew what had happened here. yall all assume that you know what happened but when you go to school with the guys, hunt with the guys, park with the guys and then watch their car get searched when they have been in the parking lot for maybe 5 minutes at they most. They were waiting in traffic when the principal talked to them. They may have had pot on them but let me tell you all something these two were smart enough to not be smokin pot and hsooting guns, when you know them on a personal level you can say things like this, but most of you people assume these are two rednecks who are stupid, no you are just ignorant for thinking that of these two. Don’t act like you are perfect and you never went to high school and didnt do stupid things but if most of you adults on here think about it what used to be perfectly fine to do when you were in high school is not ok now. So yall can put that in your pipe and smoke it if you please.

Yeah early release is the best thing about Laney, get out at lunch.

Same thing happened at topsail pretty much. Half days at laney suck, aint no need to show up. That parking lot when schools get out sucks, if they came from Castle Hayne no way they were getting in unless they jumped the curb. Also it sucks having to dump the guns at your house before you go to school.

First of all half days at Laney are gay, no reason to show up, 2nd of all if they came from Castle Hayne you ain’t getting into that parking lot after school is over coming in from the parking lot WAYYY too many people. You have to jump the curb or sit in traffic for 20 minutes. I wish you could bring guns to school, sucks having to go home after a duck hunt and or go back to your house after school and then go hunting. Same thing happend at topsail and that bo be all right.

For all of you who think you know Blake and Thomas and know everything about what goes on in their lives, I’ve grown up with both of them and they would never cause harm to anyone, yes they were stupid for coming back to school with their guns in their truck but everyone makes mistakes. By the way, they were not skipping school, I go to school with them an Friday was a half-day(also the start of Spring Break) but they also both have early release which means they get to leave way earlier than everyone else(for those of you that know everything). So get your facts straight before trying to act like you know everything about them!

As I said in an earlier post … with friends like that … hopefully the “friend” will come forward about the pot. It was found hid between the backseats.

WECT had a picture of a hand gun with their story! I commented on their website and said that was highly prejudicial and it was posted, but was removed within 30 minutes. I also agree with you about the boys intentions, I rode by Laney as this was going on and saw from the road that Mr. Kimball’s truck was being searched … I knew when I saw the skeet trap in the back of it, that it wasn’t going to be good. (I also saw him later after being released and it was still in it) … and again you are right … it wasn’t the smartest thing to go on the school property to pick someone up while the shotguns were still in the truck … too bad the students weren’t at Hanover, (roadside pick-up) or that this wasn’t 20 years ago … never would have been an issue. And as far as the pot goes … WWAY should do some more investigating … like was it actually found on the “very cooperative” student??? All I can say is … with friends like that … Mr. Kimball is a friend of my son … he has been to my house many times … and is still VERY WELCOME IN MY HOME… he is a fine young man, with a big heart … I am not a hunter … never have been … and never will be … in fact I was very anti-hunting/hunters until a few years ago … and the reason I changed my opinion is because I saw the positive impact that hunting and the crowd from Laney that do hunt had on my son. I can only hope the courts will see this for what it is … yes the boys broke the law … but they shouldn’t be convicted felons for the rest of their lives because of this mistake. This wasn’t a case of ill-intentions, or purposefully wrong doing … it was a lapse of good judgment … plain and simple

We question the contents of their cranial vault.

This was a totally boneheaded, careless decision on their part. Every student is briefed on the zero tolerance regarding weapons.

Of even greater importance, who taught these guys that pot and firearms are a good mix? I’m not anti-pot and I’m not anti-firearm, but I am anti-foolish and anti-stupid. Drugs and booze are not requisites for hunting or shooting skeet, but they are a good mechanism to get someone killed.

So let’s look at this in another light – when Dashawn carries a .380 auto to school downtown because he’s been threatened by gang members, he isn’t intent on crime or violence either. He’s simply making a stupid mistake, and these two need to be treated exactly the same as we’d treat Dashawn.

have you looked in your own backyard for centuries?????????

  • DEANSENIOR

posted by dean bogan (didnt feel like setting an account)–there are no degrees of ZERO tolerance. the boys were wrong in bringing the guns on school grounds. with the priviledge of owning and shooting a gun for recreation also comes responsibility. the boys ignored responsibility and zero tolerance on school grounds was upheld–i applaud. however, i do know one of the boys and no harm was intended. the correct chain of events in citations and so forth incurred and rightfully so. the boys should be held as an example of zero tolerance…now–in dean’s perfect world, the zero tolerance on school grounds has been carried out and served. once this goes to court, the judge should weigh all circumstances since he is a “judge” and see that the boys meant no harm and just didnt think. charges should be dropped due to the fact this was a bonehead mistake. we have all made bonehead mistakes with no harm intended. no one should suffer the consequeances for a lifetime of these types of mistakes. hopefully this will teach the boys a life-long lesson to think before acting. that lesson will serve these boys so much better for the future than scarring their public record for life. the right of gun ownership comes with responsibility–DONT GET RID OF THE CHICKENS OVER THIS!

Kudos to wway for reporting the whole story. The other news stations didn’t mention the skeet shooting. I know these boys and they had no intentions of causing harm with the firearms. It was a stupid decision to drive through the parking lot but the other stations made it sound much worse. Anything for a story.

I really wish people that are uninformed to all the facts would not make comments about these kids. These are two teenage boys, who hunt as a hobby on a regular basis, in no way shape or form are they thugs, manaces, or violent kids. Please refocus your energy on the violent people in your own backyard and not make such a big deal over these two boys. Focus on the men robbing and raping and murdering. Not avid hunters who have shotguns in their truck. Good lord
