NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department says two Laney High School students were arrested Friday for bringing guns on school property.

Sgt. Jerry Brewer says Thomas Lloyd Kimball III and Richard Blake Sutherland had been skeet shooting and returned to campus to pick up their girlfriends when a school resource officer asked to see what they had in their vehicle. He says they were both very cooperative.

Here’s the news release from the sheriff’s department:

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two Laney High School students for possession of a firearm on school property late Friday afternoon. Thomas Lloyd Kimball III, an eighteen year old white male, and Richard Blake Sutherland, a seventeen year old white male, were both charged for possession of a firearm on school property after being stopped by the School Resource Officer and the principal for driving erratically on campus. Kimball was also charged with misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia and possession of less than a half of an ounce of marijuana. Both suspects were arrested and taken before the magistrate where Kimball was given an unsecured bond of $15,000.00 and released and Sutherland was given an unsecured bond of $10,000.00 and released to his parent.

posted by dean bogan (didnt feel like setting an account)–there are no degrees of ZERO tolerance. the boys were wrong in bringing the guns on school grounds. with the priviledge of owning and shooting a gun for recreation also comes responsibility. the boys ignored responsibility and zero tolerance on school grounds was upheld–i applaud. however, i do know one of the boys and no harm was intended. the correct chain of events in citations and so forth incurred and rightfully so. the boys should be held as an example of zero tolerance…now–in dean’s perfect world, the zero tolerance on school grounds has been carried out and served. once this goes to court, the judge should weigh all circumstances since he is a “judge” and see that the boys meant no harm and just didnt think. charges should be dropped due to the fact this was a bonehead mistake. we have all made bonehead mistakes with no harm intended. no one should suffer the consequeances for a lifetime of these types of mistakes. hopefully this will teach the boys a life-long lesson to think before acting. that lesson will serve these boys so much better for the future than scarring their public record for life. the right of gun ownership comes with responsibility–DONT GET RID OF THE CHICKENS OVER THIS!

every person on this page is talkin out their tailholes except for the only few who really knew what had happened here. yall all assume that you know what happened but when you go to school with the guys, hunt with the guys, park with the guys and then watch their car get searched when they have been in the parking lot for maybe 5 minutes at they most. They were waiting in traffic when the principal talked to them. They may have had pot on them but let me tell you all something these two were smart enough to not be smokin pot and hsooting guns, when you know them on a personal level you can say things like this, but most of you people assume these are two rednecks who are stupid, no you are just ignorant for thinking that of these two. Don’t act like you are perfect and you never went to high school and didnt do stupid things but if most of you adults on here think about it what used to be perfectly fine to do when you were in high school is not ok now. So yall can put that in your pipe and smoke it if you please.

We question the contents of their cranial vault.

This was a totally boneheaded, careless decision on their part. Every student is briefed on the zero tolerance regarding weapons.

Of even greater importance, who taught these guys that pot and firearms are a good mix? I’m not anti-pot and I’m not anti-firearm, but I am anti-foolish and anti-stupid. Drugs and booze are not requisites for hunting or shooting skeet, but they are a good mechanism to get someone killed.

So let’s look at this in another light – when Dashawn carries a .380 auto to school downtown because he’s been threatened by gang members, he isn’t intent on crime or violence either. He’s simply making a stupid mistake, and these two need to be treated exactly the same as we’d treat Dashawn.
