BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Bald Head Island officials say fire destroyed a vacation home on the island early this morning.
No one was in the five bedroom, five bath house, valued at more than $1.5 million, at the time. The owners, Peter and Linda Murphy, live in New Jersey.
“This call came out about 5:38 a.m., and it was from a loud noise and the sight of flames from across the marsh,” Bald Head Island Public Safety Chief Jerome Munna said. “The guys came out, and when they did, the fire was already through the roof, and the house was fully involved.”
At this point, fire investigators think lightning from the storm that moved through last night might have started the fire, but they are still investigating.
“It is very rare that we have a fully-involved structure fire,” Munna said. “As far as the response, it was fantastic. The way our system’s laid out, we arrive on most scenes within about five minutes.”
The US Coast Guard also brought members of the Oak Island Fire Department to Bald Head Island to help contain the fire.
Firefighters say it is only the second major fire on Bald Head Island in the past two years.
The house is secluded and there was never any danger of catching other houses on fire.
