ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — An Elizabethtown business that’s been open for 67 years locked up for the last time Saturday. It was a tearful ending for Ideal Cleaners, a small business that fell victim to the economy.

“Business has slowed down, and just can’t keep it open,” said owner Ted Rogers.

Rogers’ parents opened the doors of Ideal Cleaners for the first time back in 1945, when Ted was just a little boy. He said there have been a lot of ups and downs throughout the years on Broad Street in Bladen County, but he’s grateful for the lessons learned and people met.

“I’ve had some real good customers, and everybody’s been real nice to us,” Rogers said. “I’m happy, and I’m glad [the building] sold, and at 74, I’m going to do something else.”

Rogers said he and his wife are headed to Carolina Beach to fish and do a little work down there. He’s got some good advice for anyone looking to open up their own business.

“Work like a dog, and make it go,” Rogers said. “Stay with it, and don’t walk away from it.”

Rogers said dry cleaning is often one of the first things to go when the economy slumps. He also said the cost of fuel was a contributing factor in the closing.
