WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) – An emissions inspector in Durham has admitted he falsely passed more than 350 vehicles that should have failed emissions tests in exchange for a couple of hundred dollars from the owners.
Federal prosecutors said 30-year-old Angel Nunez pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to violate the Clean Air Act.
Authorities say when a vehicle failed inspection, Nunez would test it again, but hook the machine up to a vehicle he knew could pass but was old enough that it wouldn’t send its vehicle identification number to the scanner.
Investigators say between May 2009 and June 2010, Nunez helped 353 vehicles illegally pass inspection this way, taking up to $225 from each owner.
Nunez will be sentenced at a later date.
