UNION, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say two people died in a fire in Union, and a 1-year-old girl only survived because a neighbor kicked in a door and brought her to safety.
Union County Sheriff David Taylor said four generations lived in the home, and the child, her grandmother and great-grandmother were in the house when the blaze started around 10 a.m. Monday.
Investigators say a neighbor banged on the front door when he saw flames, then kicked it in when no one responded.
Authorities say he rescued the girl, but it was too hot and smoky to try to find anyone else. The names of the women who died have not been released. Authorities say the mother of the child was not home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
