WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Division of Water Quality has fined the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority for a sewage spill back in January.

On January 24, 1.4 million gallons of sewage spilled from an 18-inch waste water force main along River Road and Barnards Creek and into the New Hanover County Tidal Creek.

The CFPUA says the $8,350.55 fine includes $7,840 as a civil penalty and a $510.55 enforcement fee.

“We have received correspondence regarding the Barnards Creek civil penalty assessment and are in the process of reviewing it,” CFPUA CEO Matt Jordan said in a statement. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with the State and hold paramount our responsibility as environmental stewards.”

The cost to treat that water is FAR more than this fine, so they charge everyone MORE for the same pink algae laden filthy water (yeah it causes Urinary Tract infections to bathe in the water in NH Co btw)

THE FINES SHOULD BE IN THE MILLIONS FOR DOING THIS, THEN THIS BS WOULD STOP. THIS IS HOW THE WATER COMPANY IS SAVING MONEY…POURING IT IN OUR WATERS SO THEY DON’T HAVE TO DO THEIR JOB.

ATROCIOUS! IF someone were to do this as a PERSON, they would be in PRISON and HEAVILY FINED, not given a slap on the wrist.

STOP LETTING THE WATER COMPANY RUIN THE PLANET. THEY ARE DOING IT ON PURPOSE!

They will probably have to raise our rates again to pay for it.

That fine won’t hurt them at all.
