Aldermen grant permit for Oceanic pier expansion

READ MORE:

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- It's time to expand. Thursday night, the Board of Alderman approved a conditional use permit for the Oceanic to allow an extra 115 outdoor seats on its pier.

Because of the Oceanic pier's poor condition, it was required to be repaired or demolished. With the extra money from more customers, the pier can eventually be repaired, allowing for a public access section beyond the restaurant seating.

There are a few conditions to the permit: the pier must have a barrier to make sure garbage does not blow off the pier and music cannot be played after 10 p.m.

Mayor Cignotti says this is a win-win. The pier gets repaired and the public will be able to use the pier to fish.

“As you know North Carolina’s piers are disappearing at a fairly fast rate and we're trying to preserve some of the fishing piers and this is one pier that we are hoping to preserve,” Cignotti says.

I would love to see Oceanic

I would love to see Oceanic management not throw a fit over people fishing off the pier and also an extra 115 seats like there will actually be any room for public access. oceanic already had renovations just over a year ago like they couldn't have done something with the pier then this is just amazing the only good thing is that the rickety pier that ive watched boards and even the pillars fall off of will hopefully finally be gone all i can say is the city doesnt need to pay for anything, oceanic has more than enough cash from their high prices and low hourly wages and three floors plus pier i think their gross profit is more than enough as long as they can keep away from wasteful spending which is really hard to do...at least for some
p.s. I have never been able to fish off the pier and doubt i ever will be without being hasseled away

I like the Oceanic

This is a good thing for the Oceanic and the beach goers. Hopefully the pier extension and repairs can be done in a manner that will improve it visually and structurally. Not sure why they can't play music after 10 PM but then again I don't live in the few homes that flank the establishment.

Awsome

I hate the peirs are disappering! It's great there trying to save one of the last ones.

om theres a concrete fishing

om theres a concrete fishing pier in eyesight that is bigger and better. Make the pier better (repair it) but dont expect oceanic is going to make the pier open publicly(especially not fishing i mean i like to eat seafood as i smell fish and bait) and almost assuredly not free. I'm sorry but I used to work there it has been sitting on the to-do list for years and years they have the money let them do it and have it However if can work out it would be good tourism
