WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Fire Department and NC Forestry Service are fighting a woods fire off of George Anderson and 17th St. near Independence Blvd.

Units on scene say the fire spread to about 50 to 60 acres.

30 homes were evacuated and three homes on Charles Payne Drive suffered minimal damages. At this time firefighters are letting everyone back into their homes.

A viewer emailed us to report he smelled smoke in the area around 2:30 this afternoon, saw smoke by 4:30 p.m. and flames at 5:30 p.m.

The fire is also near the Cameron Art Museum, which was asked to evacuate.

Helicopters have been dropping water and the fire which is now contained.

Officials say a homeless person may have started the fire and no shelters are expected to open.

FIRE IS STILL GOING AT 11:30 PM

My friend just saw flames off George Anderson! The fire is going again! They called 911, and I hope they will respond and not ignore! The fire has regained strength. They need to be sure it is really out before they leave!

Dave59999

Dave59999, what a disgusting, uninformed, useless comment. Why don't you work to improve yourself so you can join the "rich" instead of just making a fool of yourself. Oh...I guess that concept is beyond your mental capacity to understand.

Over extended

The first time in 50 years the homes have been damaged due to woods fires in Wilmington. The guys on the ground have done the best they can with what they have. Poor planning by the city chief not having enough woods units to control this early.

I also wonder how much the over extension in to the Monkey Junction helped this get out of hand? THANK YOU Mr safo.

What the heck does the

What the heck does the Monkey Junction annex have to do with this???????????? Unless I missed something, the Myrtle Grove fire station is still down there and not the city fire station. I actually believe that the Myrtle Grove station came down to help as well. And what the heck do you mean by “wood units”. I’m going to assume you mean the forest service and again, unless I missed something, the city fire chief isn’t in charge of the forest service and they also had their hands pretty full with finishing up with the Hampstead fire this weekend. That may have had something to do with them getting down here to Wilmington. Get you facts straight and stop trying to bring two completely unrelated topics together next time.

Huh?

What does Monkey Junction have to do with this? Are you completely out of touch? With it being so dry & the winds picking up, we're lucky it didn't get worse.

Great job WFD and all the other workers helping out last night. Job well done.

17th St and Gearge Anderson fire

I live in an apartment on St. Andrews and have been watching the helicopters and planes swoop back and forth trying to stop this fire. I can see some hazy smoke in the distance. It is quite an amazing thing to see. I wish them all the best of luck and I pray no one is hurt and no homes or business' are lost.

So is the fire contained

So is the fire contained now? What's going on?

Inept

Me and friends called this in and it started out as a small fire 20 feet in diameter. 4 firefighters showed up with 1 broken fire extinguisher and proceeded to stand around for 30 minutes watching it get bigger. Me and friends had it Hal put out with nothing but dirt and a bucket. Complete laziness and ineptness on the part of the wfd.

Hey confused2, maybe you

Hey confused2, maybe you should educate yourself a little before you start criticizing something you obviously know nothing about. First of all, we you say the firemen just stood around, what did you expect them to do, drive their large fire trucks into the middle of the woods to put out the fire???? Did it ever occur to you that the WFD fire trucks are manly set up to fight structure fires in an urban area, and not large wood fires??? Did it ever occur to you that maybe they were waiting on the smaller WFD forest fire pickups to get on scene so they could get to the fire??? Did it ever occur to you that they were also waiting for the forest service (who do have the resources to fight a forest fire) to get there with their equipment??? Since you want to criticize without any knowledge of what you are talking about, then I can just as easily criticize you and your friends. If you say that you and your friends had it “put out” with a bucket and dirt, I have 2 questions for you. Why then did you call the fire department if you had it “put out”??? And if you did have it “put out”, what were you expecting the FD to do??? It seems to me you didn’t have it “put out” since you called the FD, and now you just want to sit back and criticize them for whatever reason. Heck, by listening to your explanation of the fact that it was “put out” and then suddenly restarted when the FD got there, leads me to believe that either the fire grew because of the strong wind and dry conditions, like the FD has said, or you were never there in the first place and you just want to criticize the FD. Maybe you should go talk to all of the people in the area who are actually thankful for the hardwork and dedication of our firemen in saving their homes and neighborhood before you criticize people for something you know nothing about. Or even more important, maybe you should stop by a fire station and talk to the firemen to see why they do what they do before you start criticizing them, then maybe you might actually learn how hard these people work!!!!!!

Apparently you did not have

Apparently you did not have it "hal" put out or it would not have spread to 50 acres. Not sure how the fire department responded because I wasn't there but I will tell you the city certainly doesn't take care of the city workers such as police and fire department. Can't imagine you would feel more motivated to bust your butt if you only made $9.50 an hour, had only one raise in the last five years, and worked 24 hours shifts all for ungrateful citizens such as yourself. Why is it that those who put their lives on the line for us get paid the same as fast food workers? Everyone wants to praise the fire department when things go well but you will all forget how hard the fire department works tomorrow and not care.

I couldn't agree more with

I couldn't agree more with you. WFD work 24 hour shifts, for very little. They don't receive the proper training, their insurance is raised every year, and they haven't gotten a raise in 5 years. Major Saffo is an idiot. He sees WFD as a Liability, they are only there because the State says they have to be. Everyone of those people have familys that they have to support and it can't be done with what they are paid from the City of Wilmington. They did an awesome job on that fire, I am sure mistakes were made, however after spending the morning being told how their insuarance is going up AGAIN, and there will NOT be a raise AGAIN this year, I can't really see how standing in smokey woods, in heavy turn out gear in 80 plus degree weather sounds like a good time for them, just so hateful people can sit at their computers and bash the work they do, however not one of you talking about them has the balls to go into a house fire and do what they do.

Pine Valley Fire

I am sure we will hear a bunch of poor rich people will now beg the public for donations due to the fire so they can support their non-working lifestyles. All the while I am sure someone will collect insurance on this fire. The whole thing was probably set on purpose by someone hoping to cash in on the insurance lottery.

Ignorant Fool

What an ignorant thing for you to say... "poor rich people"??? Don't say such ugly things because you chose to not do well for yourself. Until you were involved you should probably keep your mouth shut. People like you cause this world to be the way it is... I feel sorry for you and I sure hope you can work on yourself and that pee size brain of yours. Pine Valley is a GREAT place to live!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU WILMINGTON POLICE, FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. YOU SAVED US FROM A LOT OF HEARTACHE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO BAD. I WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL TO YOU FOR PROTECTING MY FAMILY AND MY HOME. IT WAS A CRAZY SITUATION THAT YOU KEPT IN ORDER AND UNDER CONTROL. I SAW POLICE RUNNING TO SEARCH FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ACTIVE TO PUT THE FIRES OUT.

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS

Haha What the hell are you

Haha What the hell are you talking about?

Pine Valley Fire

in response to Dave59999, WTH, did your mom ever teach you human kindness and sympathy for fellow humans. I dont understand any of your comments. My son lives there with my 5 yr old grandson, hardworking taxpaying person. Also many of Pine Valley residents are retired, elederly whom built their homes, many years ago, when they were working and saving for what they have. Dont pick a disaster to front your agenda. Cause you seem to have one. Pine Valley is a wonderful neighborhood, and Haliburton Park is a wonderful park.

Pine Valley fire -comment by Dave 59999 6:43 p.m.

My goodness, what an amazing comment from someone who OBVIOUSLY has ABSOLUTELY no idea about bush/brush fires--and to somehow try to imply someone this area (which has a very diversified economic population rather than a bunch of "poor wealthy"--whatever) was looking to make money on an insurance claim---and beg for donations etc.--PLEASE: someone might just want to burn your "place" down or worse in anger and frustration with such a stupid "over-the-top statement about the residents in Pine Valley. Wish people could think rationally instead of just looking to fuel a media frenzy of distortion, etc... good luck to you, from someone who lives in the area and and along with many others has worked fulltime for over 25 years!

Setting

Hey genius...it's a setting on your tv smart guy! People always have to find fault with something!

My guess

Since he seems to be deaf, I'm pretty sure he knows how to turn on the CC setting on his TV. His statement is that channel 6 wasn't providing the CC feed with their broadcast. And you sarcastically call him genius?
