WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A body found in the Cape Fear River today is a missing Marine. LCpl. John J. Pruitt, 24, of Fontana, CA, was stationed at Camp Lejeune. He went missing late Sunday night.

Wilmington Fire Department spokesman David Hines says crews recovered the body on the Brunswick County side of the river about half way between the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and the state port.

A WFD boat crew found the body while patrolling after someone reported seeing some clothing in the area.

John, I will never forget how we met and how you made me laugh and ultimately want to be with you. I had some of the best times with you in those days and I know we drifted a part but I always cared about you and you will always be in my heart. I was sifting thru some of our pictures together and couldn’t help but laugh remembering the situations. You were such a charmer and everyone loved you. I will continue to remember these times and regret the ones where I let my selfishness get the best of me. My heart now goes out to your family as I know this will be one of the hardest moments in there life. You are a hero and your strength and courage will live on in your family and friends. I will miss you deeply. Your in Gods hands now. Rest in peace <3
