Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of low-income residents will have the opportunity to see a dentist for free this weekend in downtown Wilmington.

This Friday and Saturday, Cape Fear Community College is hosting the North Carolina Mission of Mercy dental clinic at the Schwartz center.

Services include fillings, cleanings and a limited number of front-tooth partial dentures. Dentists from across the state, as well as CFCC students, will be helping out at the event.

“They get right in there. They see probably like ten to fifteen patients a day so it’s a great clinical experience for them and to see the need that is out there is pretty overwhelming, how many people you’ll have hours before they open to actually get served,” said Melissa Peterson, a clinical dental hygiene instructor.

The free dental clinic runs from 6:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday and from 6:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Patients must meet certain federal poverty index criteria.

When the clinic was in Greensboro. I was there on that Thursday to get a partial and we, were told that, they were not taking people like me. They almost had a situation at the Pavilion. I took a day out of school that Friday. I spent the whole night there the day before. I was looking so forward to getting my mouth fixed because I am tired of looking like a jack-o-lantern. I can’t look at myself in the mirror. I will not be able to go to the clinic that will be held in Wilmington, but I am finding this out for a friend of mine.

2 weeks ago I was on my way to Rocky Mount when I stopped at the MacDonalds on Rt117 in Mar-Mac. There was a young couple sitting outside in dirty clothes with backpacks and obviously homeless bumming change to buy food. I took them inside and bought them lunch. I asked them where they were going. They said Wilmington. I asked if any particular reason they said they heard through the grapevine they could get free dental care( the guy was noticeably in some pain). I’m wondering if this is the program they heard about.

I have been searching anywhere and everywhere for some to do a filling on my tooth! I’m in such pain but can’t seem to find a place. I live in Wilmington but last time I called for an appointment they said ” sorry list is full” I’m young and have no job and really need a filling on my front tooth! Is there anyone out there who can help! Please someone!
