Burgaw, NC (WWAY) — Controversy continues to surround the Pender County Health Department.

Today the Board of Health called a meeting with many upset contractors, developers and home builders to try and quiet some of their recent permitting concerns.

“With the new regime that’s come in, the process has slowed down to the point that it’s just taking us too long to do repairs or do installations, ” complained Septic installer, Al Sidbury.

Sidbury has been installing septic systems for more than 30 years. He says the current health department is the worst he has ever had to deal with and they are costing him business by slowing the permit process. Sidbury claims things aren’t as efficient because of what he calls “paperwork bureaucracy” crated by the new coordinator.

Sidbury has one septic case that has been pending since March 26th. He says a few days after someone has a septic issue, sewage can be found in people’s yards, which he says is a huge environmental concern.

When the health department heard from an angry Sidbury they decided to call a meeting.

“There’s been some issues and concerns in the past and there was just a lack of communication so we wanted to kind of get everybody on board so that we could work as two teams to bring everything together,” said Board of Health chair, Jimmy Holland.

During the meeting, the health board stressed the need for a few new positions so they can speed up the permitting process. They say there is more to the environmental health in Pender County than just on site waste water.

The Pender County board of health will have another meeting with this same group within 60 days to make sure the communication issues have improved.

Excuse me Mr. Holland… Did you miss Mr. Sidbury’s comment that it is now worse than ever? We have been contacting Moser for MONTHS and not one thing has been done. Your problem is the current leadership: EH supervisor and Health Director, not lack of staff. Going from 2 weeks wait time to 6-8 weeks wait time is unacceptable to me as a taxpayer and as a contractor. Do NOT spend over $100,000 of our tax dollars to hire more people, when the ones you had were doing a fine job until Moser and the 2 EH staffers she brought from Madison County arrived.

I am sure a few new positions will help to “speed up” the permiting process. Maybe simplify the process first.

I waited for a septic permit for at least 60 days and made a lot of calls nun to be returned. I finally just waited 2hours in the office while they wrote my permit. Way too much government.

Funny thing is Moser has said multiple times that the EH Supervisor she brought from Madison County has to retrain the current EH staff. The kicker is that once they got here it took several months for him and the other sanitarian to pass and become authorized by the state to work with the types of soils we have here– what usually takes a week if you have the proper education and prepare yourself for the training.

The Pender County EH staff had a food & lodging compliance rate of 100% for 4 of the last 5 years with one of those being 97%, which was last year. Moser and her EH boys had 76% in Madison for that time frame. The current EH staff of 3 had the permitting wait time at approx 2 weeks, with just a few exceptions, until Moser and boys arrived. Adding those 2 positions increased the permitting wait time from 2 weeks to 6-8 weeks. I ask you, who needs to train who? Are there any citizens that want the health department to spend over $100,000 more for 2 more positions? I know I don’t.

You dolts are supposed to be approving permits quickly not denying or delaying them. You had it backwards. Now you know. No new positions. Just approve permits.

OK – let me get this straight – the health director is saying that the workers that are there dont know what they are doing – i am glad to hear this – i have a septic system that was put in this year that is failing …. they told me that it was my faught but maybe they are lying to me becuase they dont know what they are doing (according to health director). i think that i will go out to the health department this week and ask for my money back for the septic system that they put in that is failing – i would encourage anyone that has had anything going on with their well or septic to sue the county if their system is not working correctly. Thank you moser for pointing out to the public that your workers were cutting corners and dont know the rules – that should hold up in court….thanks again. cant wait to get my money from this lawsuit!
