Fans head to Port City theaters for ‘The Avengers’ midnight showing

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As anticipation heats up for the start of filming for “Iron Man 3” in Wilmington, fans got a jump-start to the excitement Thursday night for the opening of the superhero flick “The Avengers.”

If you like action packed super hero movies, “The Avengers” presents what is probably the ideal, ultimate team: five Marvel Comics superheroes, including Iron Man. With the Port City home to the filming of the third movie, fans may feel a little more connected to the Avengers flick.

Carmike Cinema 16 in Wilmington held a costume contest for fans before seating for the midnight showings Thursday.

“I definitely think it will pump up the energy,” said Alicia Hammitt, who works at Carmike Cinema 16. “I expect a lot more people putting in more effort into it. People are so excited about the movie here, so it’s definitely going to add to the enthusiasm.”

Both Carmike and Mayfaire theaters in Wilmington will had multiple screens showing “The Avengers” at midnight in regular and 3D.
