RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Supporters and opponents of the proposed constitutional amendment on marriage in North Carolina have made some of the final closing arguments in a nine-month old debate that ends with next week’s primary.

A conservative-leaning lawyers group in Raleigh heard Thursday evening from four lawyers and civil liberty advocates over the pros and cons of the marriage amendment.

Voters are deciding whether the state constitution should say traditional marriage is the only domestic legal union recognized in the state.

Vote FOR Marriage NC chairwoman Tami Fitzgerald said the amendment will protect marriage from activist judges or a Legislature that may want to change its definition. But Katy Parker with the state chapter of the ACLU says the amendment’s broad language will require activist judges to rule in what the amendment means.
