WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Free Comic Book Day is like the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras all rolled into one for comic book lovers of all ages. This year’s annual celebration at Fanboy Comics was all that and maybe a touch of the Royal Wedding.
“We gather together in this holy mecca in defiance of the Legion of Doom, to join together this Dark Knight and Amazonian Princess.”
Those were the words that united Adam “Batman” Mason and Donnita “Wonder Woman” Johnson outside of the comic book store Saturday morning. They are now husband and wife, better known as “super buddies.”
“We both love comic books. We’re both big geeks. Yea, we are both big geeks. We both love games and comics and stuff like that, so we share these interests, so we thought we’d come out and help our friends,” Adam and Donnita said after the ceremony.
The newlyweds are good friends of Fanboy owner Thomas Gilbert and his wife. They’ve been together a couple years and got engaged before they made the trip from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Wilmington for the 11th annual Free Comic Book Day. The super nuptials were not planned, but like any good comic book, the wedding was a surprise twist in their love story.
Besides the happy couple, hundreds of folks lined up for free comics.
“It’s a way to get new people into reading comics and get old readers into trying new stuff,” Gilbert said.
Many were in costume.
“Look at that,” little Braylon Quitman said excitedly. “Woah, look at that!”
“It gets everyone involved with the creativeness of their thinking, and it gets really everyone excited about reading,” said Jason Stolfer, who dressed up as Dr. Octopus.
Quitman said the reason he loves comics is simple: “Because it has all sorts of superheroes.”
Free Comic Book Day was a success for all the super fans, superheroes and super buddies. Gilbert said folks have already asked to have their wedding at next year’s. And the Masons say go for it.
“Make it as fun as possible, as uncomplicated and as fun as possible,” Donnita said. “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”
In case you’re wondering, the newlyweds are not going to have another ceremony, and yes, the officiant is actually ordained.
