FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) – The Department of Defense says a Charlotte, N.C., native based at Fort Drum, N.Y., has died after an attack in Afghanistan.

Military officials said Tuesday that 34-year-old Spc. Junot M. L. Cochilus died in Logar province on May 2. Also killed was 23-year-old 2nd Lt. David E. Rylander of Stow, Ohio.

A statement said the two died when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. The two were assigned to the 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum.
