RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina voters have approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman, making it the 30th state to adopt such a ban.

With 35 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, unofficial returns showed the amendment passing with about 58 percent of the vote to 42 percent against.

In the days before the vote, members of President Barack Obama’s cabinet expressed support for gay marriage and former President Bill Clinton recorded phone messages urging voters to reject the amendment.

Meanwhile, supporters ran their own ad campaigns and church leaders urged Sunday congregations to vote for the amendment. The Rev. Billy Graham was featured in full-page newspaper ads supporting the amendment.

Are you really going to try and say that Jesus and gays are alike? It’s obvious the one’s who didn’t want this to pass are not saved and do not believe in God or the Bible.

  • Guest2020 says:

For once the politicians in Raleigh did the right thing by letting this decision be made by the citizens of North Carolina. They tried to lampoon it by having it during the primary election instead of the general election, but that didn’t work. There were news stories and tv ads telling lies about how this would take away healthcare benefits for children, disrupt custody agreements and change how domestic abuse cases would be handled. None of their maneuvering and spinning worked.

Some people get ridiculous and compare this to the civil rights movement that moved to get the black people equality. There is no comparison. Homosexuality is immoral. Being black is not immoral. This comparison is a slap in the face of black people. I have seen black people being called ignorant for supporting this amendment.

Some people cry that it goes against the separation of church and state. Even if separation of church and state existed, it would not apply in this case as it is not the government that decided on this amendment, but the people themselves. Not to mention that it was not just religious people who supported this amendment.

Regardless of my religious beliefs, I have the right to vote my conscience just as much as everyone else has the right to vote their conscience. As for me, I am a Christian and I have been taught to love everyone regardless. I don’t have to condone what they do in order to love them. When my child lies to me, I disapprove of her conduct, but I don’t stop loving her just because she does something wrong. I have had relatives who lived lifestyles that go against the teaching of God’s Word and I love them regardless, but I don’t condone their behavior. I voted for this amendment because in good conscience I could not condone what the Word of God condemns.

  • get over it says:

well now the churches can get back to molesting children.apparently the bible condones that funny how all these Christians and churches never come out against that just cover it up as far as im concerned you support the church and its rules you are just as guilty for molestation of children

  • extra extra! bigots win! says:

anyone know the story, where a guy being different was nailed to a cross…….?

  • Guesthug says:

When the church starts dictating laws, it’s time for them to be considered another political party and be subject to taxation. Ignorance and fear are very dangerous to democracy. This nation seems to be on a path of closed-minded theocracy, similar to Iran or Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Hope you enjoyed your freedom while it lasted, America.

  • Guest CommonTater says:

The voters have spoken. Seems a bitter pill for some of the same old village idiot whiners around here. Fire away… Let’s hear how wrong everybody is and see how much that changes anything.

  • Guesttenheimer says:

Ammendment one passed as expected. Guess what? NC was the final southern state to pass the very same ammendment that 30…yes, GET THAT, 30 OTHER STATES have already passed! Starting to ring a bell yet?

In the case that you homosexuals, trans-whatevers, confused “Bi-don’t know what we really are.” and associated cross-dressers haven’t figured it out yet, the vast MAJORITY still do not agree with your lifestyle and do not support it. You can curse religion, you can curse the people, you can curse the state and you can curse God. The fact remains that there is still morality left in the American household. You haven’t even come close to wiping that out yet as much as you want to.

Also, if you want to boycott this great state, not work here and not vacation here, there is PLENTY of room up north for you with people a little more sympathetic to your condition. You may want to consider a move to better accommodate your “needs”.

  • Forest says:

North Carolinians…stupid is as stupid does.

  • BrandyDubick says:

“the people want to be gay thats fine go be that you shoulnt have the same rights because its a sin, just as is adultry. its a slap to gods face”
No one chooses to be gay. You are ignorant if you think that they do. It is a slap in “god”‘s face to be such a judgmental hypocrite. Didn’t this same “god” say “love thy neighbor”???? Didn’t this same “god” create everyone in “his” image???? If so than he is a bisexual, hermaphrodite who lusts after little children, murders etc… and don’t even say that the “devil” is who make people like that. Because if everyone was made in “god”‘s image they wouldn’t be influenced by the “devil” just like “he” isn’t.

“look we are a nation under god. start playing with god, we will be a a nation gone under . it leaves us vunarible in many way ex. take a look at the curan for instance. There should be no right about this will have devastating consiquinces to religious freedom”
    1 its Koran.
2 Supporting Gay marriage doesn’t leave us vulnerable at all. This is a FREE nation. Why should anyone be able to decide what 2 consenting adults can love each other? Why should said adults only allowed to be married if it is one man and one woman? Gay marriage will have no “devastating consequences to religious freedom” all it does is promote tolerance, and allow those that love each other to have that love legally recognized. Remember that law separating church and state, why should that not apply here. Why should religion get to have any part in whether or not it is legal for 2 men or 2 women to get married?

“if we let this happen gays get whatever it is they actually want”
Gays are humans just like the rest of us. All they want is to be accepted and not discriminated against. What is next? Deciding that that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations because Lev. 25:44 states that is ok??? If everything in the bible was followed and made law this nation would have been done for a long time ago. the only thing that will happen if we let “gays get whatever it is they actually want” is people like you will have to find something else to discriminate against.

“think about the next gereration your children will grow up thinking its ok to be gay ITS NOT OK open your eyes its much much more than a ring on a finger, or any benefits,or being equals” Your right it is about so much more. Including more than the genders involved. It is about love, commitment and devotion. And FYI everyone is created equal. And everyone deserves the same right to marriage. IT IS OK TO BE GAY. It is a natural thing. Maybe not in your mind but did you know that homosexuality is found in over 1500 species[], but homophobia is only found in one. Homosexuality is natural, homophobia is not.

“You will be judge for your actions mankind makes up rights this is not a right for us to make, this is gods rule and america is based on god”
You my friend will be judged for your actions and your words. In fact you are being judged right now by every person reading this. If it is not for mankind to make rights than how is it that mankind wrote the bible. It was written after the fact by men. Not by “god” or your supposed “savior jesus”. America was never, ever based on “god” it was founded and created as a safe haven, a place for freedom of religious persecution from Great Britain. Before making such a statement maybe you should go back to basic history.

Your whole post was ignorant and hypocritical. I hope that you learn to open your heart and learn to love everyone for who they are. Not discriminate against them for not being who you think they should be. If “god” needs to help anyone its you.

  • Guest 2012 says:

Gay marriage is immoral. Enough said!!!!

  • marriage says:

If same sex marriage is approved-I think these marriages should take place in a courthouse only. As a church it is their responsibiliy to uphold the Bible. Going against it is wrong. Let the church keep its beliefs instead of conforming to liberal ideas.

  • Jonathan Reed says:

Here’s what i find hilarious. This wasn’t a victory against gay marriage. This wasn’t a victory because there is already a law in place that prohibits gays from getting married. So this is in place to stop them from doing something they can’t already do.

What this does is shoot in the foot are the people who voted for it. Hey women, guess what. Now you can’t be single mothers. I’ll repeat that. Because marriage is between a man and a woman, you now officially need a MAN in your life, legally, to have kids, to keep your kids, and to adopt kids. Should someone in your neighbor hood decide to use this law to take your kids way… kiss them and pray to God that they find a nice married couple to take care of them.

Any Re-married couples out there with spouses who have kids that aren’t yours? Ie, a Man remarried a woman who already had a kid. Guess what, you now no longer have the right to make decisions, medically, for that kid. EVER. And God for bit, (and i do mean this, really don’t want this to happen to anyone) but God for bit that she passes away, because you are won’t be allowed to take care of them. this also goes for you covering them under your health care.

Common law marriages are now out the window, ie a couple living together for 7 years are by law married. NOW HOLD ON A SECOND, don’t just cheer yet. This means that All domestic battery charges on a man beating a woman now drop to a minor offense, and for the future, well… better hope they don’t get fist happy, because marriage is between a man and a woman and this law says you shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

So yeah, this law has really helped the sanctity of marriage, the kids, and straight people every where.
    Pat yourselves on the back.

  • GuestReality says:

You should know, Forest. Your email was pretty stupid.

  • Challengetheworld says:

Yes, there is no common law marriage in North Carolina BUT there is a co-habitation law still on the books. It cost a Pender County Employee her job a few years ago. It is rarely inforced but it is among many old south, backwards, let me control the people, anti-constituion of the US, NC Bible bred laws.

Instead of repealing them like the state should, we just added another ONE!

  • Living in NC says:

    Bravo, Well said.

  • GMAB says:

I suppose the next constitutional amendment proposed by our wonderful conservative legislature will mandate that the Baptist Church is the only recognizable church, and all other churches must close their doors. Then what will you do? People came to this country seeking religious freedom, and our soldiers die every day for our freedom, and now that freedom is in jeapordy. Today is a sad day.

  • Tom says:

    So don’t get one

  • deputy says:

just to let you know about judging someone, GOD has already done that , we are just stating a fact!!!

  • Das Weibstück says:

…..where you can marry your cousin but, not your gay cousin.

  • Jonathan Reed says:

I find this astounding. Someone who voted against amendment 1 posted this.
“You shouldn’t spend your time worrying about other people’s lives like you can control the world”
This was posted to Grand Ole Party, who voted FOR amendment 1.
Grand Ole Party had this to say “I agree with you, so stop worrying about our lives.”

Grand Ole Party, while I don’t normally resort to insults and name calling, i gotta say the level of your hypocrisy is astounding (really really big, like that fish that got away that one time) and makes me question your own level of intelligence and ability to connect the dots (those numbered dots that when you drew a line from one number to the next made a fish in your bible study class when you were a kid).

The fact that you just voted and rejoiced in the passing in a law that Does JUST THAT. It gets into people houses and lives that are none of your concern. And don’t bother quoting Lev to me again… I’m so sick of seeing that. Regardless of if its a sin or not, its GOD’S job to lay down the judgment and punishment as HE see’s fit. It’s also the sinners place to seek repentance and forgiveness. YOU sir have no place in that, that’s between God and them.

“Let those who have NOT sinned, cast the first stone.” Well sir, we are all sinners, I’ve sinned as i’m sure you have, but what i’m not going to do is care or concern myself with your sins, lifestyle choices, or wether you get into heaven or not, because its not my place. I’m going to concentrate on my own soul and my own actions in this world. I’m also not going to pass judgment on you. And while I’m sure this message more than speaks for the fact that I think your a tool, what i’m NOT going to do is pass a law that forces you to keep your mouth shut. I’d suggest you take your own advice and the advice your The Bible and stay out of peoples lives.

  • Beach Bum says:

I heard what you are saying and listened to your message, I just don’t agree with it.

Homosexuality is a choice, not genetics. It is a learned trait, not ingrained into your DNA.

Why is this even a discussion for NC anyways? Sodomy is illegal in this state. So, by law, should all gay people be in jail?

Why is ok for a gay couple to have their domestic partners on their medical insurance, but I can not have my adult children on mine? How is that fair to me?

I do support segregation. Keeps things uniformal, no individuality and eliminates confusion.

You have every right to stay. You are entitled to have an opinion, even if it’s wrong.

Hope you enjoy looking from the outside in.

  • GuestOverIt says:

OK, if you didn’t vote either way, for or against the amendment, then you really have no right to complain about the outcome. Christians cared about the outcome, so they got out and voted.

I don’t hate anyone, but I’m not going to vote contrary to my religious beliefs. Whoever told you Christians are perfect? Far from it; but if we make mistakes or bad decisions, it’s up to God to judge us, not you and not the ungodly.

Calm down, have a cup of java, take a deep breath, and deal.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

It’s not about hate. Some people just see marriage between a man and a woman. But you are correct, it will be reversed, in about twenty years. We right wing nut-jobs think you left leaning morons are wrong, not again, but always!

  • Citizen -1 says:

So this goes to prove that factually State and Religion are not separate. Since gays are second class citizens they should not being paying the same taxes as straight or heterosexual people. This is the same mentality that was in place before blacks were considered equal. Discrimination proves the closed minds of the “citizens” that voted against this law. So when your abusive spouse wants to beat you silly I suggest you run to your minister so he can tell the abuser to stop. (Wow another joke right!!. When children cannot receive the services they need is the Church going to be there to provide the services that were taken away? I suspect you won’t see the bible carrying people running over to assist them.

The citizens had best start thinking of what rights they are losing next!

I address this to our elected officials. When will you be informing the churches that they are no longer tax exempt? They cannot have it both ways…Can’t say we’re separate just for our purpose. There is no elected official that supported this amendment that can now honestly say “I represent the people”. Now they will have to say I represent the closed minded heterosexual people of this state, and they support special interest. So when can we expect the new laws or admission that the elected officials know the difference between Church and State.

Finally you people that voted for this wonder why we’re the laughing stock of this nation….seriously?

  • GMAB says:

Oh yes, the majority has spoken and they have thrust their sword directly through the heart of liberty, freedom and justice…when will this madness end?

  • lance radford says:

homosexuality is a sin, the fact is is out of every religion known to the world, every denomination and most countries are against itthe people want to be gay thats fine go be that you shoulnt have the same rights because its a sin, just as is adultry. its a slap to gods face

  • becky J says:

Way back when, people would have said i couldn’t marry my husband because he is black…Way back when, he would have had to pick your damn cotton because of his color because the “people” in charge said so and now MOST people agree that way is not the right way…….one day equal rights for all will change…….it took a long time for Rosa Parks to refuse to give up her seat on that bus, it took a long time for people to sit at that famous restaurant counter and refuse to move and evidently it is taking a long time for people to see that ALL people deserve equal rights…..

A same sex relationship is not MY choice BUTTTT who I choose to marry and live with in my house should NOT be the Government’s CHOICE and the people should not even vote on this…..If the damn government all of a sudden came and said you can’t be with your signifigant other because of whatever it may be color, hair color, where they were born, money, same education, blah blah blah you would be fighting for your rights also.

It is sad that because it doesn’t apply to you personally it doesn’t matter. AMERICA should always matter !!!!…………If every body can’t have equal rights then those in charge should be trying to abolish equal rights for every one but we all know that won’t happen because it affects the ones deciding…..IFFF God is judging on that fateful day then so be it but we should not !!!!!!!!!

  • Beach Bum says:

When are you leaving? I will help you pack your bags? Why is it hate when someone does not agree or share your point of view?

I don’t feel bad for the homo’s, they majority of soceity has spoken and feel that legal marriage is between a man and woman.

You don’t want our bibles running your life, well we don’t want your beliefs or views in ours.

So, feel free to use I-40 westbound anytime. I will even spot you a tank of gas.

  • Guest2020 says:

People living sinful lifestyles does not make God happy. God cannot look upon sin. That is why when Christ was dying on the cross, he uttered the words, “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me.” In His moment of death he bore the weight of all sins, past, present and future and God could not look at him without looking at the sin. I can lay my head down at night with a clear conscience knowing that I did not condone that which God condemns.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

Listen MORON….This~”You shouldn’t spend your time worrying about other people’s lives like you can control the world” Was a quote from the person above me. Hence the quotation marks. I will spell it out for you next time. Jeez. Read first then comment. Second, I in fact did not vote for anything as I am currently in Afghanistan. Nor at any time have I said I was for this amendment. What I am against however is the negative stereotypes being used to describe the people that voted in favor of it. Go back and read my other post genius, I have stated that I am in fact NOT against gay marriage, nor against gays serving in the military. As to the verse from the bible, the above poster stated that it was a verse open to interpretation. So again I pointed out the verse and stated that it is in fact not. And quite frankly I could careless that you are tired of seeing the above stated verse, if you are so sick of reading it, STAY OFF THESE FORUMS GENIUS. Now prior to responding to this, READ THE DAMN THING.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

We get it, you don’t believe in God. However it would seem that 61% of the people of the state of NC don’t believe in gay marriage nor civil unions. Christians are not all republicans, bigots, racists, rednecks anymore than the old stereotypes that gays are all pedophiles. You may disagree with the way the vote went, but to group everyone together that has a different opinion than you is ignorance and you are well aware of it.

  • law knower says:

Let me first say that I agree with you BUTTTT there was never a law in NC that said if you lived together for more than 7 years you were married. Other states yes NC no…jus sayin :)

  • GuestHaHaHa says:

The difference is that North Carolians wouldn’t WANT to marry their cousins, gay or otherwise. Wow, Das, you sure get insulting when you lose….oh, wait, most of your posts are insulting anyway.

Your mama should have taught you how to lose better.

  • Guest2020 says:

This is not the same thing as what the black people went through. Homosexuality is immoral. Being black isn’t.

  • GuestMajority says:

Like it or not, the majority of voters in NC voted for this amendment. The majority rules. By the way, a lot of black people here voted for the amendment also, and they are being verbally attacked just like Christians.

  • GuestHappy says:

Women are second class citizens too, but I can guarantee you nobody is going to cut my taxes; just the opposite, they cut my PAY. Seriously, the majority of voters want this amendment, like it or not. It’s now part of the State’s Constitution, like it or not.

Remember that 30 other states before us voted for the amendment also. Before you blow a head gasket, I suggest you learn to deal with it.

  • seeingit says:

It is a sad day when our president openly supports gay marriage. He and his supporters will try to persuade you to go along this path where there are no rules in life and where it is all “evolving”. They are raising their heads higher and talking more so that we can see who they are and remember them. God does not speak of his plan to everyone. Thus many will be confused. Stand your ground. There is right and wrong in the world. There are rules to live by. Because God wants mankind to be in His image and not deluded away from it.

  • Guest2020 says:

I voted for the amendment and guess what–I have never been afraid of homosexuals. I voted my conscience. This is nothing like segregation and to suggest such is a lap in the face of black people. Homosexuality is immoral, being black isn’t.

  • GMAB says:

Since when are you and I supposed to be at war with one another? We are all Americans and should be working toward making our society better, stronger. This amendment hurts everyone and when they take away the rest of your freedom, you will regret what you have done to your fellow Americans.

  • Das Weibstück says:

Least I post under the same name so you can see my pattern.

  • Guest2020 says:

Since churches cannot vote, they cannot dictate laws. This amendment passed because it was the will of the people. Your comparison to Iran in Afghanistan is too ludicrous for further comment.

  • GuestReality says:

I just sent an email to soon-to-be ex-President Obama, notifying him that because of his new stance on gay marriage, I can no longer in good conscience support him for re-election. It’s time for the silent majority to get vocal and let him know where we stand.

  • GuestHappy says:

Uh…those laws were written for people of the Jewish faith only, and some of the food restrictions you mentioned were changed in later books of the Bible. Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing…but at least it got you to read a little bit of the Bible. Nice try.

  • GuestHappy says:

Yada, yada, yada…same old rhetoric from Das. Big surprise there, huh?

  • GuestReality says:

So your parents, in their 80’s, voted against it. Well, well, that certainly helps to explain why you are the way you are.

  • Guest2020 says:

If I didn’t approve of my daughter’s husband I would still respect their marriage and would not intervene in their relationship unless he was abusing her. My daughter knows that homosexuality is a sin and would never have a same-sex partner.

  • Das Weibstück says:

  • GuestHappy says:

    Now, now. Don’t judge….

  • Guest7969 says:

since some of you think that the government shouldn’t be the arbiter of morality…and others shouldn’t decide who and who shouldn’t be married….I want to marry a 14 year old…HECK..NO..I want to be a polygamist and marry 5 14 year old girls. WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME NO? After all…we could be in love and who are you to tell me and/or them we are in love.

So you see..EVERYONE places their version of morality on others..cause 100% of you feel that is SICK…this was no different. A segment of the population, the majority, felt this was sick…and placed their view of morality on you. JUST LIKE YOU WOULD DO IN THE ABOVE SCENARIO!

You are so wrong. The majority does not rule, God rules.

  • GuestHappy says:

Yeah, it does….and mine keep you replying too, huh?

  • Monkey Junction says:

I think time will take care of this issue. The highest percentage of people that voted for the amendment are older and in time these voters will be replaced by younger voters. Younger people are more apt to vote for gay marriage. I think in 20 years this whole issue will be gone and there will be gay marriage. Time will tell.

  • Das Weibstück says:

If the christians would stop posting I would too. Am I not allowed to have opinions cause you disagree with them?

  • Das Weibstück says:

Glad that you felt the need to reply to a post directed at another person.

You and I are the totality of a billion years of evolution. The human body is amazing, but so are the bodies of monkeys and many other lower mammals. They all contributed in some way to the human species, the highest form on this planet, so far.

A few million years ago, humans did not exist. We were evolving. Viruses are evolving right now, at an alarming rate. That is why new strains of influenza or drug resistant viruses are appearing.

The evolutionary process involves trillions of mutations over millions of years. Some of the mutations are improvements, some are not. The poor ones fail.

The human reproductive process is very much the same as a snake, or bird, or dinosaur. All these animals have a male and female, need a fertilization procedure, gestate and give birth to a complex, small version of themselves. Even microbes reproduce. That is where we evolved from.

Just like our politics, there are two distinct beliefs about the origins of our species. As you can see I am an evolutionary, but I like discussing this with rational folks who have a different view. However, I have learned that it is very rare that either side will change their opinion.

    Have a lovely day.

The part where the bible says, in Leviticus, that its despicable for gays to be gay IS written by God, but the OTHER laws in Leviticus are written by jewish men and can therefor be ignored. So how do you know the difference. More to the point, doesn’t that mean we can ignore the 10 commandments, since they were written by Moses and all and he’s not only a man but a jewish man?

  • Jonathan Reed says:

I got the food laws but what about the rest of those crazy laws. shell fish had nothing to do with beating your kid to death because he talked back to you, or that after your wife has her period, you should burn the bed or be put to death.

  • GuestConservative says:

I’m a conservative and I don’t hate anyone. I just voted my conscience. I’m sorry if you don’t agree with me but, hey, it is what it is.

Calling people bigots and trying to shame them just because you don’t agree is one of those “wrong” things you spoke about in your post. The majority of voters have spoken and voted the amendment into our state constitution. There’s nothing unconstitutional about it.

Your post sounds like an immature child who didn’t get their way so they’re having a temper tantrum. You don’t have to lose like a loser; your can lose like a winner.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

You can marry your cousin in 25 different states. NC being one of them with exceptions.

  • Guest555555 says:

You just sound like a poor loser to me.

The amendment does not make it illegal for an unmarried woman to have a baby. The amendment does not make it illegal for children to live with step parents. There aren’t any common law marriages in North Carolina. You can leave your property in your will to whomever you please.

You don’t like the law, fine. But stop lying.

  • Guest461 says:

First of all, if you don’t like it here…MOVE. Second of all, this was southern state number 30 to vote the same ammendment into their constitution….NUMBER 30! Third, this was a great majority vote by the people. It is a statement.

Thus, maybe…just maybe the STUPID ones are those that can’t seem to figure out how their sex organs are REALLY supposed to be used. Now, is that brain cell of yours starting to fire yet, Kilroy? You do realize that if your “Momma” had been gay, you wouldn’t be here to write such idiotic comments, right?

  • Christian says:

A proven fact???? Who exactly was the judge?

  • Roy says:

First and foremost, for the billionth time; there is no such thing as seperation of church and state. Secondly, long before you and the rest of us whom are alive ever became part of this once great country, we had very intelligent people called; FOREFATHERS. Yes, these people wrote the constitution and the bill of right and even that other little document called the Declaration of Independence. They did not smoke pot and make peace signs and text and listen to rap and care much about anything the reformists called politicians are saying today. You see they are the only reason this country exists. Not because of the pompous arrogance of this sitting pres, no not hardly. These people set this country up so that it would not fail. One nation, under God. Nobody really cares what any of you have to say about religion. Before it became easy to talk crap about God, He was highy respected. Now you laugh at Him. Enjoy. Thats your problem when the time comes. For now, God is all anyone has ever had or will have. You young ones dont remember what a great coutry we were before the sixties when hippies and others started tearing at our fabric. Chaos is the norm now and all we have to talk about is something like this? Rome went down and so will we. Same scenario and noone learned what history has already proven, so sad.

  • Roy says:

Your breath and why you are breathing is a fairy tale. You call the Bible a fairy tale and yet you are alive. When you do meet God and you are judged have a good laugh with him about the fairy tale. You only have maximum maybe fifty years left whomever you are because you sound very indignant and naive. The fairy tale will have a blurry ending for you if you dont try to realize its not a fairy tale. Life is real short keep laughing until you are either afraid or are about to die. Then you will bow your head or fall on your knees and beg Him. You are another one of the ones I will pray that you will at least try the alleged fairy tale. I will not respond to anything you or other post unless you make a rationale point and not sarcasm nor ignorance. Thats all people seem to be able to do anymore.

  • Wilmington Observer says:

    The silent majority has spoken.

    Wilmington Observer

  • Challengetheworld says:

Now we are among 30 bigot-filled states! This is disgusting! North Carolina now looks like the old south again. Can you conservatives take just one minute and STOP hating someone? No one wants your bible taken away from you but we don’t want it running our lives either!

This amendment is un-constitutional. It will be reversed. Its not even a north vs south thing its a WRONG versus RIGHT thing. This time the RIGHT WING NUTJOBS ARE WRONG AGAIN!

HATE HATE HATE…thats all you care about.

  • Guest2020 says:

First of all, you are the one that needs to get over it. The majority has spoken. Secondly, just because the Roman Catholic church had priests that molested children and officials who chose to sweep it under the rug, that doesn’t mean that Christians should ignore other immoral behavior. And you will find that most Christians do not in anyway identify with the Roman Catholic church.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

That has to be one of the more ignorant sentences I have read all day. Let’s see you back this up with the proof. Anyone can spit out supposed facts. Here is one for you….It is a proven fact that Christians is spelled with an IA not an E.

  • GuestDeal says:

It’s comforting to know that you included yourself in the “stupid” category, since you are also from North Carolina.

Hypocrites and homophobes live everywhere, even in your part of the state. Maybe you’ve just got your nose so far up in the air that you can’t see them; or maybe you haven’t looked in the mirror lately.

Just because you were in the military doesn’t mean you have the right to pick and choose for me. You helped fight for my right to vote as I see fit, and I thank you for that; but I want my own vote (not yours), and I voted my conscience. You may not agree with my decision but, hey, it is what it is.

Accept the fact that the majority of voters has spoken. Man up and deal.

  • homosexual bible verse says:

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 – “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (NIV).

  • Grand Ole Party says:

Maybe you missed all the hate comments from the loosing side..Strange how that could have happened. Really it’s not complicated to interpret what God said about gays~ Lev. 20:13, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a DETESTABLE act; they shall surely be put to death. Not a lot of room here for different interpretations.

I am overjoyed that you are from the south. However NC is not alone. Currently 30 other states have the same law in effect or very similar. So you can cut the southern crap. It’s not flying.

“You shouldn’t spend your time worrying about other people’s lives like you can control the world” I agree with you, so stop worrying about our lives.

  • GuestConfident says:

Did you not read the “hate comments” coming from the losing side? Where they call us stupid, unable to decide for ourselves, and how we will burn in hell for our decision (including your own post)? Why are you calling us out, when the opposing side (including yourself) is commenting just as poorly? We voted our conscience, after much prayer and consideration. I’m confident with my decision to vote for the amendment.

How can you assume to speak for God when you condemn us for the same thing? Man up, Mr. Man. It’s a done deal.

  • Das Weibstück says:

“what God said about gays”??? god didnt say a word, man wrote the bible. You all find it easier to believe the fairy-tale than the truth.

  • Das Weibstück says:

SO I guess all of you that committed those sins are pretty screwed huh? OH but wait, we can be forgiven and get into heaven……… what a load.

  • Das Weibstück says:

My parents are in their 80’s , they voted against it. The atheist numbers are growing as well so the churches wont control as many sheep in the future.

  • wingnutsrule says:

Was always supposed to be that the rights of the minority were still protected. This does none of that, and for what? So the bible thumpers can feel righteous that they have crammed their religion down the throat of another state?

I know NC was definitely not the first… they have just caught up with Idaho, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama in the race to the bottom.

  • GuestReality says:

Yes, you’re right. We will die off (hoping for another’s death is considered murder by God’s standards). But we will be replaced by our children and our grandchildren who have been trained up in the way they should go. There will always be young people from the church who know that homosexuality is wrong and against God’s law. They will vote just like we did because they will know right from wrong too, with the Bible as their guide. No where in the Bible does it say that God approves of homosexuality. It will always be considered immoral and unnatural, deviant sexual behavior; and there will always be upright, God fearing people who will vote it down.

  • GuestHappy says:

Only because you want the attention. Good or bad doesn’t matter, as long as you get it.

  • Das Weibstück says:

What are you saved from exactly? Don’t say hell, hell does not exist. So what is it?

  • GuestHappy says:

It’s only sad for the losing side.

  • calculatedrepubmove says:

The Repubs in the legislature knew EXACTLY what they were doing. If it was a general election issue, more people would have gone to the polls… more Independents and more Democrats. With an essentially unopposed incumbent Dem president, and a previously hotly contested GOP presidential contest, you had to KNOW the hardcore Republicans would be going to the polls in better numbers than anyone else.

If you disapproved of your daughter’s husband, would you keep him from visiting her in the hospital if something happened to her? I guess if she was with a same-sex partner, you’re now happy that you have the right to keep her partner from visiting her.

  • Guest1248 says:

So according to this verse a large proportion of so called Christians and several pastors, priests, etc also will not inherit the kingdom of God. Especially given most are adulterers, and greedy, and drunkards……. Those who live in glass houses….

  • Jonathan Reed says:

If that’s the case, do you support this?
No resident of the state of North Carolina may consume shellfish, under penalty of the law (Leviticus 11:10)

No resident of the state of North Carolina may cut his hair, under penalty of the law. (Le…viticus 19:27)

No resident of the state of North Carolina may work on Sunday, under penalty of death. (Exodus 35:2)

No resident of the state of North Carolina may consume pork or touch a dead pig, under penalty of the law (Leviticus 11:7-8)
No resident of the state of North Carolina may clothe themselves in polyester, or other items made of more than one fabric, under penalty of the law. (Leviticus 19:19)

No resident of the state of North Carolina may curse their mother or father, under penalty of death. (Leviticus 20:9)

No blind or “deformed” residents of the state of North Carolina may attend church services, under penalty of the law. (Leviticus 21:17-18)

If any male resident of the state of North Carolina is unfaithful to his wife, both he and his wife will suffer the penalty of death. ((Leviticus 20:10)

No female residents of the state of North Carolina will be permitted to any position of authority, including teaching, under penalty of the law. (1 Timothy 2:12)

  • GuestHappy says:

    Different, yes. Homosexual, no.

  • GuestOverIt says:

Poor loser. Spew all the hatred you want, while accusing others of the same thing. Guess it’s OK for you, huh? You’re the minority and you lost, so be like your post name and “get over it”.

  • Legalbeagle says:

…you lawyer up. Your amendment will be going down. Have a nice day!

  • Forest says:

…but I live in a part of the state you are likely unfamiliar with. It is a part where people don’t judge other people by the sexual orientation they were biologically assigned by God. (Your God, which makes it even better.)

It is a part of the North Carolina where cowards don’t hide behind their own prejudice, or assign the degree of sin based on their own phobias. People here don’t cherry-pick portions of the bible to support their argument, since it also justifies slavery, and a host of other things that are considered ‘immoral.’

They are smart enough to understand history, and how the whole marriage thing evolved, as well as how it was crafted to suit the purposes of the time. Marriage now, in no way reflects what marriage was back in biblical times.

Being a straight white male with a wife and kids, I recognize that homosexuality really doesn’t affect me, but the loss of any fellow American’s basic freedoms, affects us all, since the slippery slope eventually can end up as a theocratical government (like Iran, Afghanistan, etc.) Since I served about 3 decades in the military, I am more acutely aware of exactly what I fought for than most of the chicken-hawks.

Hypocrites and homophobes don’t live in this part of the state. The only solace I take today is I know that the ignorance is slowly dying out…and when our maker judges the quick and the dead, you’ll be judged by what is in your heart.

It is a very small part of the state. One I am absolutely certain you are unfamiliar with.

Oh and yes…Momma was a real smart lady.

  • Mr. Man says:

So I am a heterosexual male that is married just to get that out of the way first. We are all born under the idea of freedom. Which means you can live your own life, make your own decisions (sometimes), yada yada yada. But to read all the hate comments from the winning side. Do you not have lives of your own to take care of? Children, work, etc.? Do you really think that God the all powerful all forgiving, would approve of “your” beliefs in his words? It is funny to see how many people read the same book but have so many different interpretations. But what they believe from their interpretations IS what GOD was saying and that is what it is supposed to mean. If you find love in someone of the same sex and you are truly happy, that in itself would make God happy to know that his children have found the happiness they desire in their hearts. Shame on all of you. I am from the South and it looks like we are still moving backwards. You all have your own lives to worry about. You shouldn’t spend your time worrying about other people’s lives like you can control the world. Your God will judge you one day based on your beliefs and the horrible path you are taking on this and many other things I am sure. Would love to see that go down when your time comes.

  • GuestMajority says:

You’re right…He does. And He saw fit to have this amendment pass. Good call!!!

  • GuestHappy says:

I never said you wanted attention from me…I was talking about attention in general. You may go weeks without a post, but when you do, it’s always negative and it’s usually aimed at God, the church, or Christians.

Your last sentence just proved my point.

  • Living in NC says:

    Where do you live?

  • Challengetheworld says:

The majority of the North Carolina society has spoken, yes. I respect the democratic process and I see that, unfortunatley, people voted from fear. It’s clear.

I’m not leaving, why should I? I’ll make it my business to make sure the conservatives know that because someone doesn’t agree with your book that it makes them wrong.

I’m not even homosexual, I just hate people who are afraid of a person or group of people because they are different and not by a choice they made.

This is exactly like segregation. Did you think that was a good idea too? I’m sure your parents did.

  • Guest2020 says:

The courts cannot rule against the constitution.

  • Common Sense says:

You’re the idiot. Like most liberals as long as the vote goes your way it’s “the will of the people”. When it doesn’t go your way it’s off to court. This one is a constitutional amendment. Good luck in the courts idiot.

  • Justin America says:

The courts are not allowed to legislate. As our society decays, judges have started to become activist. The people voted for this amendment to keep (loud & proud)activist judges from pushing our society further down the toilet.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

Anyone who doesn’t agree with you must in fact be an idiot. Because your way of thinking is the ONLY way to think. Maybe someday Charles, but not today.

  • James C. Taylor says:

The NC court cannot rule against the amendment. The NC constitution was what was amended, giving the court no leeway to find an amendment to the constitution is unconstitutional.

Your only hope would be for the court to somehow find that the measure was put before the voters illegally, which I don’t believe it was.

And it’s not nice to call people you disagree with idiots.

  • DITTOS says:

Sorry Charlie, the people have spoken. I will concur that when people have voted, a bunch of IDIOTS put and IDIOT in the White House. Hopefully the people have recognized the error of their ways and will correct it come November. The courts have NO SAY here.

  • Guest12123 says:

Vote was not even close. 61% to 39%. What makes you think the 39% are the ones who are better people or more enlightened. I personally do not care what two people do behind closed doors. Where does it end though. The people have spoken. You can always move to the Northeast!!!

  • Charles Walters says:

What a bunch of IDIOTS for passing this stupid ammendment. The courts MUST rule against this ammendment as quickly as possible.

  • Guest2020 says:

Crimes will not be affected by this amendment. That’s just more of the chicken little rhetoric and lies that have been spread by those opposed to this amendment.

  • 09:30 Mass, Catholic Convert says:

I think that it’s a sad day when people openly judge others because they go to church. If you feel the compunction to interfere with someone’s marriage, you can be labeled as well. As for having a cold beer, glass of wine etc… Jesus was at a wedding feast & turned water into wine, it was His first miracle. If you attended church, you might understand the significance. Funny, with respect to the gay community, whatever happened to tolerance? We’ve been tolerant of what people do in the privacy of their own homes, yet when alternative lifestyles are shoved down our throats & we don’t like it, we’re intolerant? The people have voted, you need to accept it – or better yet, be tolerant of others! Also, there’s a saying – judge not lest ye be judged… Further, the act of marriage boils down to a man & woman to procreate. That should not be taken lightly, yet when you look at it, you don’t see it that way & that’s part of the BIG problem. Gay lifestyles are a choice & do not provide the ability to procreate on their own. It is an aberrant lifestyle. As a lifestyle, it is a CHOICE. Sort of like getting a tattoo, you can understand that correct? If you get a full sleeve tattoo, & an employer doesn’t think that it presents a professional image, they may not higher you. Even in a place like a veterinarian’s office. Funny people shouldn’t judge others, but they will still do it… Then again church attendance is way low across the country… You’d know that too if you went to church, or concerned yourself with those statistics. With that said, and your concerns of church goers voting in a way you don’t like, I guess it’s a safe bet that others who don’t attend church didn’t see it your way…! Have a nice day & be blessed! See you @ church…

  • Grand Ole Party says:

At least half of what you said makes no sense at all. Sounds like a bunch of cackling from a three year old. I am not even sure what your point is. If you know what WIVES and husbands are doing does this mean they are doing it with you? Or are you hiding in the closets watching? Or do you really just have no clue what you are talking about?

  • goseniorgo says:

How is it that I completely understood the meaning behind your statement, yet still read it in the voice of a drunken Ralph Wiggum?

  • Guest 65 says:

This is a sad day for nc. All the crimes that happen in nc mean nothing. I just pray for the ones who voted for amendment one that if you have a family gay or straight living not married just realized what you have done. There are good people whom believe in god but there are some who go to church just to be seen. And at 12:05 that have that beer in hand or down road cheating on their wifes on my i know of so many who do this or also live a gay lifestyle on the side. But in all of my years ive never never seen voting taking place in churches til this year just wonder how many were influnced by this. Also how many will be false. I know whom will be judging me and it church wont be any of you sunday hypocrties. Live with what you have done. Maybe i should just let wifes and husbands know what their better halfs are doing. But nope im not as sick as yall are AMEN

  • Kasey says:

The church had to step in because if we let people like you decide we would be plagued and cursed with eternal damnation.Furthermore we are not the one that will judge you but if you dont read your bible you WILL get judged accordingly.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

NC is the 29th. state to pass such laws banning gay marriages or civil unions. It doesn’t make NC look anymore ignorant than any of the others. Disagreeing with your personal beliefs does not make someone a redneck. Time and time again you have stated that you don’t believe in God, that he is just a myth. Okay we get it, we hear you. However now the majority has decided they too would like to be heard. They voted, and they have been heard, THEY DON’T BELIEVE IN GAY MARRIAGE ANYMORE THAN YOU DO IN GOD.

  • Guest461 says:

Das, again your disdain for people that don’t accept your unconventional lifestyle compels you to call names and generalize. I suppose that would be a normal reaction for those that fail to accept the fact that this is the final southern state to pass this ammendment, FOLLOWING 30 OTHERS of the same results.

I realize you are emotional now and have had difficulty fitting in with society due to your lifestyle, but you can’t blame this on “churches” or “fanatical rednecks”. It is simply the great majority of people with morals and with families that still believe in conventional lifestyles and pro-creation (you folk can’t do that, remember?). Families still love to have the joys children and grandchildren that don’t have to evolve from test-tubes or cryogenic semen banks due to sexual orientation. Sorry, but flagrant displays of homosexuality is still an embarrasment, albeit a fact that some families are forced to deal with. Luckily though…MOST families still do not need to.

  • Das Weibstück says:

What a shame. This woman on tv (Tami Fitzgerald) blabbing about how proud the churches and Christians are for getting this passed makes NC look like a bunch of ignorant fanatical rednecks.

Now that the churches are writing our constitution they should ALL BE TAXED.

  • Guest2020 says:

The churches didn’t pass this amendment the people did.

  • Justin America says:

Over where? Are you implying that all Southerners are gay? Once again; Yankee is Dutch word referring to English speakers seeking God in the New World. Think about what you are implying about yourself when you use a reference like Yankee towards people you don’t like. I like to substitute; informed / un-informed for north vs. south comments. Read; the influx of informed people are probably the real problem… etc. So, what is the problem that you see informed people causing here?

  • Guest2020 says:

But, the influx of yankees over there are probably what the real problem is.

  • Justin America says:

a cow, people would laugh at me because it would be silly and of course deep down I would know I was wrong. People are not laughing with you. Stop trying to redefine marriage.

  • deputy 25 says:

Just read your BIBLE and see what happened when Lot’s wife looked back. Maybe you will be that pillow of salt! nope, take your whooping and go home, get in your closet and stay there, and don’t you come out now , ya hear!!! dont hate you, just the sin.

  • Caleb Ponton says:

Someday in the future, North Carolinians will look back on today, and see the mistake that was made. The battle was lost. But this war on equality is far from over.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

The amendment clearly states that no domestic partnerships, civil unions, or whatever you want to call them will ever be allowed for gays and Lesbians.

That means that gays and Lesbians will never have the same rights under our current tax structure or in regard to undocumented rights of survivorship that you and I have.

Yet we have a federal constitution that requires states to afford “equal protection of law” to its citizens.

We have now spit on the Fourteenth Amendment and enshrined gays and Lesbians as second class citizens in our state constitution. Had this amendment simply banned gay marriage, it wouldn’t have even hit the radar screen. It probably would have passed by ninety-percent, amd certainly would have received my vote. No, the legislature had to go further and single them out to be denied rights afforded to heterosexuals.

“Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.” Their sexual activity is between them and God, but their rights as American citizens is an issue for they, and anyone who believes in equality and fairness, to raise to Caesar.

Congratulations to the Christian Taliban on your temporary victory. I’m sure this is heading for the federal courts and even the most conservative judges will find that it goes too far.

  • Guestrocketdog says:

The people who voted against this were voting on fear tactics….so sad!

  • GuestCaesar says:

The majority of voters voted yes to this amendment. In your own words, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s”. It’s now a part of the NC State constitution because that’s the way the majority of voters want it. People in 30 other southern states have already voted the same way. You may not like it, but this is a democracy in action, whether you agree with it or not.

  • Guest2020 says:

It only takes filing a healthcare power of attorney to enable someone other than your next of kin to make your medical decisions.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

Read my post, Nimrod. I was opposed to the amendment and voted against it.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

Most simply banned gay marriage. That would have been fine with me. Taht would have been fine with most people who voted against Amendment 1.

But we went further. We went too far, and our perpetually penniless state will now find itself paying millions to defend this in federal court.

Anyone who is a true conservative and understands the Constitution knows that Amendment 1 goes too far.

  • doyouknowwhatyouvotedfor? says:

NC already had a law against same sex marriage. An amendment defining marriage was good enough for the people of Alaska, Montana, Arizona, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Colorado, and Wisconsin. But apparently not for NC and 19 other states.

Now, in order for same sex couples to have ANY legal recognition at all, the Constitution of NC has to be changed. Legal recognition that would let someone inherit his or her same-sex partner’s estate in the absence of a will. Legal recognition that would enable same-sex partners to make end-of-life decisions, OR EVEN BE ABLE TO VISIT THEM IN THE HOSPITAL…

How does this benefit anyone? I guess you have the satisfaction of being able to force your religious views on people.

What ever happened to one person’s rights ending where the next person’s rights begin? Maybe next we’ll amend the Consitution to define the free exercise of religion as the weekly worship of Jesus H. Christ, and that no other religion shall be protected under the First Amendment. Would that make you people happy?

  • Guest2020 says:

And by doing so they would once again be overstepping their constitutional authority.

  • fedtrumpsstate says:

…rule on whether parts of a State Constitution are in line with the U.S. Constitution. When NC ratified the Constitution, they were bound to it. And if a Federal court decides that Amendment One is a violation of the 14th Amendment, then it’s unenforceable! Just like NC’s amendment in 1875 that banned interracial marriage became invalid after Loving v. Virginia in 1967.

  • fedcourtscanrule says:

But Federal courts get to decide if NC’s constitutional amendment runs counter to the US Constitution.

  • Das Weibstück says:

    sorry double post.

  • Das Weibstück says:

Get this, I am HETEROSEXUAL. I am married and have kids and Grandchildren.

I do not have to be gay to know they should have the same rights as you and I enjoy just because we were born straight. It has nothing to do with MORALS (which christians seem to think they have a monopoly on), it has everything to do with fairness. I guarantee you I have better morals than most of the ppl I know that claim to be christians.

I did not call anyone names, try reading comprehension.

  • Guest2020 says:

I would say that I am disappointed with the results in New Hanover County, but I didn’t expect better from people who keep re-electing the idiot mayor, city council and county commissioners like they do.

  • Guest2020 says:

By over there, I meant New Hanover County. If not for the influx of yankees, then the vote wouldn’t have been so even.

  • Challengetheworld says:

The courts and this state have not seen the last challenge to amendment one.

Our public education system is failing miserably and here in NC we are worried about Adam and Steve getting married? Really, get a clue.

Politics and relgion DO NOT MIX! Nor does postive morality and hatred. The “majority” in this state just voted in favor of discrimination based on the bible.

    That is WRONG.

  • Das Weibstück says:

So no complaining from you if the majority votes Obama in for 4 more years, Ok?

  • DITTOS says:

The people voted! Majority rules! DEAL WITH IT!
