WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Sewer work is again causing delays on River Road. It’s now closed between Independence Blvd. and Sanders Rd. while the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority works on the Barnards Creek sewer/force main improvement project.

In the meantime, all traffic will be re-routed to Carolina Beach Rd. This portion of the road is scheduled to re-open in two weeks.

Additional roads will be closed in the area next month.

Well May 22 has past and still closed. Funny thing about the last closure not one bit of River Rd. was touched and yet they closed the intire road…?? I wasn’t born an raised in NC but man it’s like the Twilite Zone here. Yes, I’d move back to once I came in a heart beat.

June 2, 2012 ” News Flash ” River Rd. in Wilmington still closed. No estimated reopen date has been communicatd to the tax paying public at this time. Like I said earlier, “Twilight Zone”

Ok I moved from California in 2007. In California there exsists real sidewalks and curbs. Underground untilities instead of hanging power, phone, and cable lines everywhere. The infrastructure in this state and others here in the south and north east has horrendous. Being a hurrican states with the tax % were it’s at all untilities should be under grond by now. Your sewage and water (main lines) should have been update by now as well. All these are great jobs to be had or created.

Oh and grats on blocking the annexation.

Is it a repair project or does it just coincidentally happen to be convenient for the developer along river road to tie in to the system? If it is for the developer, then they should complete the new road before closing the existing road.

River Road is the only major north south route serving NHC south of CBR as well as Pleasure Island. Tourist season is upon us and the traffic is a mess when River Rd is open. Stop closing the roads.

  • Guest2020 says:

The powers that be tend to have a thing for doing things to close the roads during the tourist season.

  • Rick Dunn says:

Can Someone PLEASE update the community as to the status of River Road? Or at least suggest where to get the latest information as to when the road will be open?

  • BRIAN says:

I just hope they open river road faster than it took them to
paint the Memorial Bridge! 3 years to paint a bridge??? Broken town..

  • guesty says:

Maybe next time the NCDOT can call the Golden Gate Bridge Highway Department and ask them for some pointers.

For those of us who live off of Sanders it would be nice to have a more definitive reopen date of River Road. Each morning traffic is backed up from those that have to get off River Road at Sanders and those who are dropping their children off at Bellamy. Our subdivision, which has only one entrance onto Sanders, is backed up each morning. They could have waited until school was out to do this project so the Bellamy traffic does not continue to trap us all in our subdivision.
The posted signs no longer give a date of reopening and the timeline of May 21st is obviously past. Give us more information as to why the delay or what the new re-open date is! The public is more understanding when given some actual information instead just reporting the road is still closed. Yeah, we know, we can read the bright orange signs. BTW, Memorial Day incoming tourist traffic was worse thanks to this continued closing.
