WASHINGTON, DC (ABC NEWS) — President Obama today announced that he now supports same-sex marriage, reversing his longstanding opposition amid growing pressure from the Democratic base and even his own vice president.

In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, the president described his thought process as an “evolution” that led him to this place, based on conversations with his own staff members, openly gay and lesbian service members, and conversations with his wife and own daughters.

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Roberts, in an interview to appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday. Excerpts of the interview will air tonight on ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Nightline.”

The president stressed that this is a personal position, and that he still supports the concept of states deciding the issue on their own. But he said he’s confident that more Americans will grow comfortable with gays and lesbians getting married, citing his own daughters’ comfort with the concept.

Just because I don’t condone the way someone lives doesn’t mean I don’t love them. I have a close friend who is gay and I love them, but I don’t agree with their lifestyle. I believe what the bible says and will indeed let God do the judging. Yes God loves everyone but doesn’t but hates sin. Do we all sin? Of course. But the point is to turn away from sin and ask forgiveness. You can’t continually do wrong and just expect to be forgiven, we are called to repent from sin, to turn away from it. When we fail, we ask for forgiveness, but we should not blatantly sin just because we believe “Oh it’s OK, God will forgive if I ask.”

  • GuestReality says:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Gay marriage isn’t about love and wanting to get married to seal any bond; it’s about money and getting better benefits. In the long run, it’s going to cost taxpayers a fortune. Mark my words.

  • Guest5555555 says:

What he did was stupid. He can’t win without the conservative vote.

  • GuestUnhappy says:

The Bible teaches love, but not homosexual “love”. To God, it’s an abomination and it’s unnatural. No matter how much “society” changes, and no matter how many people accept gay marriage, according to God’s Word, He will NEVER accept it. Period.

  • Guest7969 says:

you could always pack up and MOVE to one of the 10 states or so left that don’t have this on the books.

  • Guestsmiley says:

Our president has more Christian values than his republican counterparts. Love for ALL humanity.

  • GuestReality says:

He may be YOUR president now, but he’s certainly not mine anymore. He doesn’t represent anything that I truly believe in. Come November, my vote will be for the other guy.

  • Guesttenheimer says:

Pedophiles and rapists are humans too, right? By obeserving the shift in forcing everyone to consider homosexuality as “socially acceptable” behavior, just how long will it be before the pedophiles and rapist demand their rights too.

When the very basics of morality go out the window, it opens a lot of doors. The doors to Pandora’s box!

  • Das Weibstück says:

He IS your president. He was voted in by the majority just like Amendment 1 was. I have to deal with the amendment being law even tho I voted the other way.

  • Das Weibstück says:

I think he did last time. Hes always been pro choice which isnt conservative either.

  • Das Weibstück says:

This matters why? A lot of people know there are no gods and think with their own brains.

  • Guest2020 says:

Having someone who is not your next of kin make medical decisions for you is as simple as filing a Medical Power of Attorney. And if I am not mistaken anyone you designate in a HIPAA form can receive information from your medical care staff.

  • Guest CommonTater says:

Good one there smiley…. Our Flip-Flopper in Chief hasn’t a clue. One and done!

  • Sans says:

I can’t stand Romney, but I can not vote for Obama this year as I did in 2008. Not after this.

  • Poof says:

North Carolina…You can marry your cousin, just not your gay cousin.

  • KeithJudd2012 says:

Will someone please tell me what the difference is between “flip-flopping” and “evolving”? Oh…that’s right, party affiliation. Thanks for another unbiased news story.

  • Justin America says:

Oh, enlightened one. Please tell me. How did we get here? BTW, God also said that in the very last days there would be scoffers asking when will He return? And saying; Everything has been the same since the beginning. They will be willfully ignorant of the World that was destroyed by the flood (Evolutionist / public schools) and that this current World is reserved for a fiery judgment for non-believers. Good to know.

  • Annoy says:

I am at times utterly ashamed to call myself a resident of NC. The people here are prejudiced in more ways than one. They either hate minorities or gays or better yet both!!!

We are all humans with no room to judge anyone for what they do. They want to use the bible as a crutch for their bigotry. The bible also teaches LOVE.

So people we shld just love one another and let Jesus do the judging.

  • ray says:

It is about time… in NC in a same sex relationship for the past 14 yrs, we have been denied rights to make medical decisions for each other when one might not be able to. We have been lucky enough for both to work for a company, Interstate Hotels and Resorts, that is so progressive, that we were both able to claim one and other as dependents, and give each other medical insurance coverage. With such coverage when I was admitted to the hospital this weekend in complete renal failure, my partner was able to receive information about my care, but was not able to assist in making decisions as to my care. the people at New Hanover Regional Medical Center recognized our partnership and gave my partner full discloser and includrd him in all decisons that needed to be made. The staff at NHRMC need to be commended for their recognition of our relationship, no one batted an eye when I proclaimed Perry as my “partner”. My Doctors spoke to him directly when I was a bit fuzzy, the nurses did as well, and formed a bond between him and me. We may have had this attention because of our insurance coverage, but I do not think so, what we experienced was a true validation of our 14 yr relationship by the professionals at NHRMC. If we were actually able to quote Beyonce “put a ring on it”, we would. We ARE a couple and have been for 14 years, we are lucky enough to work for a company that recognizes our relationship, but wish that he stae we live in would.

  • johndecker910 says:

I applaud the President. Well done, Sir.

What he did was very brave.

  • Guest7373 says:

dont like this state and what the majority stand for … MOVE!!!

  • not surprized says:

I now have something that I can support Obama on….as leader of the GAYS! May he be dressed in his rainbow attire. I guess the closet door
has been snatched off it’s hinged by his partner in the WH BIDEN.

  • Guesttenheimer says:

…and denounces his own country to the world calling us “arrogant”. Why would anyone be surprised at this statement? He follows the muslims and is nothing of the “Christian” he professes to be! Thank you “first time minority voters looking for free stuff” for putting this person into the position of leading our country! What a slap in the face to America this man has been!!!

  • GuestMan says:

It is if I want it to be or did you forget about free speech.

  • GuestMan says:

Obviously, you know very little about etiquette and is evidenced by your post.

  • Guest7969 says:

There is NO free speech on this board…it’s moderated. In addition…it’s called etiquette…I know that’s a big word, but you can look it up… GOOGLE is your friend

  • Guest314 says:

This isn’t a story about Romney, this is about President Obama.

  • Justin America says:

And Romney has Joseph Smith’s brilliant book of mormon. BTW, if the angels name was Moroni, shouldn’t this group be called the Morons? Anyway… it just keeps getting gooder and gooder.

  • GuestUnhappy says:

He certainly won’t get my vote come election time. If you really believe in God, how can you in all good conscience vote for someone who is for both abortion and gay marriage?

  • GuestReality says:

That’s OK…my husband’s vote will cancel yours out again. I could include my grown children, my parents, my aunts and uncles, etc., but I think you get the gist of it.

  • Guest7969 says:

You think the Democrats are FOR you…LOL..your so cute….they are for the CHILDREN..but want late term abortion…they are for women and womens rights and support Muslim countries who follow sharia law…they are for the minority…but passed laws AGAINST equal rights…

They are for ANYONE stupid enough to believe what is coming out of their mouths and will vote for them…

  • GuestReality says:

Amen, Guest7969. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

  • GuestReality says:

He may not be a Muslim, but he doesn’t seem to be a Chritian either, or he wouldn’t support abortion and gay marriage. Not quite sure what he is, but I know what he isn’t. He won’t be losing the election come November; he lost it yesterday.

  • GuestDashedHopes says:

I must admit that I had such high hopes for Obama when I voted for him. He certainly painted a nice picture back then, but over the years I have begun to see more and more that he has become a liar and an embarrassment. He doesn’t support anything that I believe in, and I can’t in good conscience support him in the next election.

  • Guest439 says:

It is time to impeach him from office. He just goes with the majority so he can get votes in the future.

  • Guest3369 says:

Liar, Liar, Koran on fire! How many times is this President going to flip-flop on issues? What a complete and utter ignorant leader and an embarrassment to this great country.

  • Guest 10101 says:

… bringing the Koran into this issue. In case you havn’t heard yet, the President’s not a Muslim.

What a completely ignorant and embarrassing thing to post.

  • GuestMan says:

I suppose Romney hasn’t flip-flopped on EVERY issue already.

  • Guest1106 says:

If it bothers you so much.. Remember; this is a free country.. Move out of the country!! That’s if you have a passport..

  • GuestReality says:

Well, it’s official. Obama just lost my vote. I was on the fence before, but now I have NO doubt.

  • Office Fan says:

I was strongly leaning Romney, that is until now. I will definitely be voting FOR Obama now. I will not cast my vote for Republicans when they place discrimination as one of their leading party platforms.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

Obama~ “amid growing pressure from the Democratic base and even his own vice president.” Yes Mr. President, cave in. Don’t stand up for what you believe. This is the best news the Republicans have heard in years.

Truman’s most famous quote “The buck stops here”
    Obama’s “It’s Bush’s fault”

  • Lorraine Conley says:

Dose it surprise anyone Obama is NOW for gay marriages after the vote. There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: the fashionable non-conformist. Ayn Rand

  • k says:

I cannot believe Barrack Obama has not been removed from office. What is happening in USA? It is like the twilight zone. The Bible I know says homosexual is not natural.. an abomanation. Obamanation scary

  • Really? says:

Why did he wait until the day after North Carolina’s vote on Amendment One? I would think almost all supporters of Obama who opposed Amendment One would have welcomed this announcement by the President in support of their stance prior to yesterday’s vote…unless a large majority of those supporters believe he is a liability… Is my logic flawed?

  • GuestGf says:

He will say anything for a vote! Good sign of running scared. Maybe we will get a good president this November.
