COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Fair Bluff's police chief is in hot water after being charged with selling drugs on the job.

The district attorney says officers arrested Marty Lewis yesterday while he was taking part of a drug-deal on duty and in uniform.

A Columbus County grand jury indicted Lewis for multiple felonies. The most serious of these charges are conspiracy to traffic prescription drugs and conspiracy to traffic cocaine.

Lewis would not answer our questions today on his way into court for a bond hearing.

District Attorney Jon David says this is not an isolated incident. He says the SBI and Columbus County Sheriff's Office have been investigating Lewis for about seven months. Today's hearing revealed the investigation began his own officers reportedly told investigators Lewis allegedly staged a robbery of guns.

"Prosecuting the chief of police represents some special challenges, and among those is the fact that a lot of our cases pending in the court system were initiated by the Fair Bluff Police Department," David said. "So we're going to evaluate on a case-by-case basis whether or not we are able to proceed on those matters."

Lewis faces several drug charges. After his hearing he went back to jail under a $150,000 bond. He quickly bonded out again. The judge also gave clear instructions for Lewis to stay away from the Fair Bluff Police station.

Who bonded him out?

Who bonded him out?

I have known Marty for about

I have known Marty for about 16 years. I realize that it looks bad, but knowing him like I do, I have a very hard time believing he is guilty. Everything seems a little too convenient and neatly packaged. Smells a lot like a set up, especially considering that Batten knew Lewis was planning to run against him......ear

fair bluffing

as you can see it doesnt matter if ur white or black,or police chief or pastor, people can do some of the dumbest things when they need more money. I say lock his tail up.. cus guess what hes a dumb drug dealer that got caught up like every other heron dealer.and havin relations wit the town clerk hope she wasnt married.k..come on fair bluff, are u bluffing me?

Good ol' Columbus County!

Good ol' Columbus County! Gotta love it! Marty must have really pissed off one of the "Good Ol' Boys" this time! Or maybe he was taking business away from some of CoCo's fine political leaders. Things that make you say "hmmmmmmmm". I really hope that this isn't true. I've always liked Marty as a person and respect him in his role in law enforcement. If he's guilty, he's guilty. He's no differnt than Columbus County's other finest...he just got caught. It's a crying shame that if he goes down he can't take all the other crooks down with him. The SBI and feds need to roll through CoCo and clean house, but we all know that won't happen either. If you ever wake up in the middle of the night and can't sleep, especially around 3:00 in the morning, get in your vehicle and take a cruise around the county. Pay special attention in Tabor City and Chadbourn. You would be surprised WHO you see and WHERE you see them and WHO you see them with. Just a friendly public service announcement! To Marty I wish you the best.

marty

This is my family and im proud of marty. I dont believe this and ive never never seen him act in anything illegal. He works hard and seem to be call on duty 24/7. Because the town wouldnt pay officers enough so they were going to other towns. I believe in marty and i always will i love you marty and your family

I hope this isn't true. But

I hope this isn't true. But if it is, 'How Dumb Can You Get' ?

this man changed my life...

WHATEVER Marty is being charged with I don't feel could be possible. If it wasn't for Marty my family would not be where we are today and my father would not have been punished for child abuse and taking indecent liberties with a minor. I thank him for rescuing us from that hell we indured.

What happened to public information?

With the exception of Federal Inmates, the charges of anyone in a jail is public information. Why are they not releasing this information? What is next secret tribunals?

His charges are easy to find

His charges are easy to find on the internet if you know where to look.

As a follow up question

is he still on the payroll? One is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

If he's smart, he's pumping iron daily and taking martial arts instruction.

If convicted, he will not be very popular at his next place of residence.

His employer

can not speak; ever heard of confidentiality on personnel matters.

Not certain what the DA will reveal; unless there's been a plea deal, probably not much.
