WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Keeping us safe is often a dangerous job. There are thousands of men and women who put themselves in harm’s way every day and many who have paid the ultimate price.

Law enforcement officers from around our county gathered today to mourn the loss of their fallen comrades, but also to celebrate their lives and honor their service. The ceremony took place at the memorial in front of the Wilmington Police Department, which displays the names of officers who have died.

“Emptiness, loss, sadness, yet honor, duty, grief. Some of these things, they never go away,” WPD Capt. Jim Varrone said.

He said the hurt heals with time. As far as being scared for his own life, Varrone says protecting people is the top priority for him and his friends in uniform.
