WILMINGTON,NC (news release) — The U17 Cape Fear Breakers Boys Soccer team made local history this weekend by becoming the first ever Wilmington team to capture the US Youth Soccer NC State Cup. The team defeated Piedmont Triangle FC, 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout that ultimately decided the outcome of the final. The victory extends an amazing run the Cape Fear team has had in 2012 winning the Disney Showcase, NC League title and now the State Championship.
The teams were locked at 0-0 after ninety minutes of regular time which sent the game into overtime consisting of two 15 minute periods. PTFC were the first to break the deadlock when a corner kick resulted in a stunning headed goal from fifteen yards, ten minutes into the first period. Cape Fear launched attack after attack to try and get back in the game but the PTFC defense absorbed all of the pressure and frustrated the player’s right into the final minute.
The game changing moment came with forty five seconds remaining, When Noah Gulley a six foot, midfielder launched a massive throw in from the left side of the pitch which went all the way into the six yard box, bounced in front of the keeper, rebounded off the back post straight to the waiting head of Alexander Johnson who made no mistake and planted the ball in the back of the net keeping Cape Fears title hopes alive. The final whistle blew seconds after the ball was tipped again and the teams prepared for penalties.
Coach Kenny Bundy and assistant coach Will Paige huddled the team and selected the first five players who would shoulder the responsibility of taking the kicks and attempting to secure the victory. PTFC won the coin toss and were the first to take a penalty. Justin Savinon read the first shot perfectly, dove to his left and pushed the ball around post to safety to give Cape Fear the advantage. Five successful penalty kicks in a row from Gary O’Neill, Ryan Kawzynski, Vance Morvil, Carson Ratcliff and Aaron Sparks ensured the victory and sparked wild celebrations from the team and spectators.
The finals took place over two days at the Bryan Park Soccer complex in Greensboro. Cape Fear defeated FC Carolina Alliance in the Semi Final 2-0 on the Saturday to secure a place in the final. The goals came from Gary O’Neill with a penalty and Daniel Harris with a fine finish from a Vance Morvil cross from the right.
The U17 Cape Fear team now represents North Carolina in the Regional Finals, June 15 – 20 in Greenville SC. Success at the Regionals would give Cape Fear an opportunity to compete for the National Title alongside the other three Region Champions.
