WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger’s house is being foreclosed according to a notice posted this week in the Lumina News. It will also be auctioned off at the New Hanover County Courthouse on May 29 at 10 a.m.

Berger’s ex-girlfriend, Karyn Crichton, is also named in the notice as an owner of the house. Berger lives in the house by himself. No word on where he will move to after the auction.

He’s reportedly been unemployed since taking office, but he says he does work out of his house as a consultant.

Berger has not yet returned an e-mail for comment.

I’ve never been a fan of Berger. Bad personal choices and an inability to controll himself or contribute in the way an elected official is expected to contribute have turned him into a political political pariah. We have every right to critique him on that basis.

Lately, he’s been keeping his head down and at least doing his best to avoid additional faux pas. Good for us and better for him. We all know he’ll never again be elected to a political position around here. All we have to do is wait him out.

Having said that, it also really needs to be said that those of you who’re taking the time to kick a man who’s already down are way out of line. Dumping on a man who’s losing his house? That has absolutely nothing to do with the man’s political persona. It’s a cowardly, disgusting thing to do. You’re acting like jackals.

The jackal is a night hunter, nocturnal, and quite cowardly. They feast on carrion, which is flesh left over from a dead animal. That’s pretty close to where Berger is these days, politically speaking.

Lower yourselves to your lowest level if you choose to. Feel free to give visitors to our area the impression that we’re just a bunch of dumb lunkheads. Act like a jackal instead of acting like a human being if that’s what floats your boat.

Keep in mind though, if you choose to feast on carrion, you are what you eat.

Excellent, excellent comments. I can’t even add to them…well said.

  • Guest2020 says:

Knowing how hard it is to lose a home, I have nothing but sympathy for the man. I pray he lands back on his feet and gets going in the right direction.

  • Citizen of the Republic says:

but there is no honor any way you look at it.

Good luck Mr. Berger, rebuild your life, it’s not too late.

  • Peyton Garrett says:

This should be deemed the final in all of the events over the past year and a half for this man. I hate to see this happen to anyone, especially someone who almost unknowingly it seems let himself be put into this position. I think if Mr. Berger had concentrated on his own problems, focused on what ever it is or was he did for a living and not been so manipulated by his handlers he may not be in this situation. And I do put a lot of blame on those handlers, advisers and pure manipulators who have taken advantage of someone who had no business running for a seat on the commission but winning and then trying to serve. He was not capable. You people know who you are. As I have stated, now that his capabilities have been exposed and he has been more or less rendered ineffective as a commissioner his so called allies have retreated or moved on to other issues and self serving agendas. I have been one of Brian Berger’s harshest critics and will continue to be so. He has no business on the board but his so called friends have been the architect of this man’s problems. I hope they sleep well.

How many of the foreclosures done were for elected officials? This isn’t any different than the reports about big mouth jason showing his butt at meetings. Would you rather not know that an official elected to represent you can’t even manage his own house? Go with the whole ignorance is bliss trick?

If you feel that badly for brian, let him move in with you.

  • Beaumont Guest says:

This notice was published in the Lumina News last week. Notices like this are required by law, I believe. Berger’s foreclosure notice was among many printed in last week’s Lumina News. Perhaps Guest211 you should endeavor to learn how this process works—you will then understand that this is a matter of public record. I believe that this is indeed “news” because Berger is an elected official.

  • Guest211 says:

How many forclosures are advertised to this extent? Lots of them are done daily, but are not advertised like this.

  • guesty says:

So If I was renting a house from you and stopped paying you rent, you would let me live there for free? Yea, didn’t think so. So why should a business do it?

  • Guest1 says:

Um, people who don’t pay for their homes do…

  • Shammalammadingdong says:

The guy might be a nut job, but no one deserves to loose their home.

  • Guest111 says:

Dear Lord! Berger has been quiet for a long time. Please let sleeping dogs lie. Don’t comment and let this just go away.

  • Guest u bet says:

Come on guys, get out of your office and find some real news.

  • Guest1 says:

I’ve been wanting this, too! Every story about him is crazier than the last, but none reference the long list of crazy that preceded it.

  • Guestbdndhd says:

WWAY, or anyone else out there. Is there or will there be a comprehensive story on the rise and fall of County commissioner Brian berger, and all the insane and wild events he has been apart of for the last few years? I would love to share with my friends and family the train wreck this man became after showing (what seemed like, through supporters and media coverage) so much promise during his campaign.

Please, someone write a story about this insane troubled individual, this mans story needs to be told. It’s too good to be true.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

…after a public notice, required by law, appeared in a local newspaper. No one is picking on Berger, just following the standard menu for foreclosure.

The fact that WWAY chose to cover the story as local news is completely within their right as a media outlet.

  • j says:

He’s an elected public servant. This information is important for us to assess his competency as an elected official.

  • guesty says:

An auction on the court house is as far from private as one can get. Don’t want people to know your business, don’t go into politics.

  • Guestsad says:

Really? Why does the world need to know this? Are we in the business of totally ruining another human being’s reputation? Come on WWAY, Can’t some things be private about someone’s misfortunes? I don’t even know the guy, but a little compassion for our fellow man?

  • Guester says:

He’s already taken care of totally ruining his own reputation. He’s in public office. Nothing is private.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

I will match you dollar for dollar. I will help this poor sap out, you give your man Edwards some funds for his defense. What do you say? Hell maybe R.C. Soles can kick in a few dollars to boot.

  • Guest 4545 says:

You’re absolutely right that is what Barry Soetoro is calling for the re-distribution of wealth. We’ve got a moron in New Hanover County, the country has a moron in the White House. Look at the big picture next time you post.

  • Guest9743 says:

Maybe the local tea party and his other supporters will buy it and let him live in it rent free, after all freinds do and should look out for each other during difficult times!!

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

Berger is an undisciplined, immature little jerk who has simply never grown up.

Obama is a crafty, scheming Socialist who knows exactly what he’s doing and is intent on ending the freedom, liberty, and free enterprise that built this nation and are the hallmarks of America.

Do not underestimate him by assuming he’s a moron.

  • Guest6858 says:

Thank you Common…..You’ve hit the nail (s) right on the head. People PLEASE wake up and smell the coffee!

  • GuestMan says:

The wealth is already being redistributed. The problem is that the republicans are the ones acting like socialists. Social Democrats believe in manipulating the tax rates to the advantage of a certain economic class and that is what is happening. The problem is that it is for the benefit of people that don’t really need it. Our country’s wealth is being redistributed UP and redistribution is redistribution. It isn’t like they are using the money to create jobs, so don’t even go there. This is the big picture. They should pay the same tax rate I do. I’m not saying pay more than me, just the same. How could anyone have a problem with that?

  • pcc says:

This guy unemployed how is he suppossed to direct wilmington if he cant run his on life.. its not rocket science if someone is successful in their business and personal life then they will make a great politicians i hope Wilmington figures this out maybe you should have your credit run and it must me higher then a certain number

  • guesty says:

He works as a consultant? Who in their right mind would ask Berger anything other than directions to the crazy barn?

  • burgerboy says:

it looks like his constituents would help hold a fundraiser or at least put a jar at the counter at the gas station that says “SAVE BURGER” so the poor fella doesn’t lose his house. I’d give him 20 bucks! They let that dirty old man RC Soles run amok up their in tabor city and do all kinds of depraved stuff, and they don’t take his house away. This is a outrage! That burger fella is my kind of folks, it’s a shame to see a humble christian man like himself when him’s down and out, but i’m sure he’ll do well and recover like he’s always done.
