FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) – Some Fort Bragg Green Berets are the first non-Canadian military unit to receive the highest team recognition from that country.
The Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation was presented Wednesday to 74 Green Berets for their actions in a battle near Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2006.
In the fight, a Canadian-led NATO mission cleared a Taliban stronghold in a district held by more than 1,400 Taliban. The U.S. soldiers helped flank the Taliban and gain high ground.
It was the largest operation of the war at that point and was seen as a possible turning point.
The Canadian commendation has only been awarded six other times since 1992.
