Potential smoking ban fires up again in Wrightsville Beach

READ MORE: Potential smoking ban fires up again in Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- The push for a smoking ban in Wrightsville Beach has fired up again. After the Board of Aldermen voted against a ban, supporters of the ban are bringing the issue back to the table.

"It's definitely a problem we have at the beach, one that I personally would like to see go."
Wrightsville Beach resident, Lydia Chandler, is tired of seeing cigarette butts on what should be a beautiful shoreline.

Ban supporter and Wrightsville beach resident, Lydia Chandler, said, "Cigarettes do nothing but cause litter and something else for us to have to clean up."

Chandler is just one of many who would like to snuff out smoking at the beach. In fact, there are so many supporters of the ban that the Board of Elections has verified enough signatures on a petition to force the town to adopt a ban or put it up for a public vote.

Smoker, Nic Metcalfe, picks up the butts after each smoke. He says fellow smokers just need to be responsible.

"If you're smoking on the beach, you should use different tools like these portable ash trays so you keep the beach clean,” Metcalfe said.

It's an issue that has both sides fired up. Earlier this year, the board voted 3-2 against a smoking ban. But the petition of signatures could change everything.

Town manager, Bob Simpson, says the Board of Aldermen will likely hold a special meeting June 7 to address the issue. He expects the ban to be on November's ballot.

This proposal is absolutely

This proposal is absolutely ridiculous. When are people going to "GET A LIFE". Individuals today spend more time trying to control and butt into other people's lives than minding their own business and life (look it the mirror guys). And those of us who work and are justing trying to live our lives quietly and happily, have kept our heads down, are letting our rights and common sense be walked on. Enough is enough! What will they want to ban in the future...over-weight people (they make me feel uncomfortable)...people with tatoos (they scare and offend me)...children (because lets talk about littering and noise here). Come on people stand up and shout...who do these people think they are? My family has been coming the WB for the past 28 years, but I will be moving on if this issue passes.

No safe level of secondhand butts

Geeze. Pocket ashtrays have been around for decades. Give them out along with the doggy doo bags. Hopefully this will prevent anyone from getting a case of the vapors at the sight of a cigarette butt or deadly germ carrying secondhand chewing gum.

I live on the beach and do not feel the recent ballots that were sent out were illegal. The ballot was not anonymous, they asked questions that were irrelevant to my voting rights, and wanted to know how long you lived on the beach and if you were an owner or a renter. I am not sure all of that information needs to be attached to your vote. I have a feeling they only want homeowners to vote and would like them to justify why they were asking all of the other questions. Are they just going to count homeowner votes?

I see people pick up their butts all the time. Maybe they should first start with ticketing people who litter then consider the ban.

smoking ban

We already know that individuals and politicians think they own Wrightsville Beach. Do they think they own the air too? How can the poor anti-smokers possibly tolerate even driving to the beach with the thousands of cars polluting their poor lungs?
As for the woman who collected 42,000 plus cigarette butts - did she count every one of them and was this count verified?
In China, everyone else's business is your business. In the USA, everyone else's business is none of your business!
Get a life people!!!

Smoking ban-WB

I approve the smoking ban. I've been to nonsmoking beaches & it's very pleasant to be able to walk the beach & not see a bunch of butts lying around. It didn't stop the people from the going to the beach, in fact, the residents say it brought more tourists cause they liked being on a clean beach. Smokers who toss their butts where they belong are an exception. All the folks who are screaming about this ban why don't you start picking them up & tossing them in the trash then you might change your mind cause it's disgusting. When I walk the beach I pick up so much trash mostly plastic/butts, it's sad that we have so many irresponsible people who expect others to clean up after them.

Smoking ban-WB

I agree with cintrek .... too many butts on the beach ... I just hate to walk on the beach and see all those butts on the sand and sticking up in the air ... I'm glad most of them are covered by bathing suits ... beaches, not a place for children these days....gross me out to the 10th power ... haven't seen any plastic butts but with the trend toward plastic surgery, who knows?

Will the next ban be that we can't breathe on the beach? Go ahead and try to make me put my cigarette out while I'm OUTSIDE. Not going to happen. And yes I still drink on the beach too

This is typical of most smokers, most of whom could care less about their health. I've found that most smokers think it is their privilege to subject other folks to their nasty, cancer causing habit.
