WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than two years after it started painting is done on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

DOT Resident Engineer Wayne Currie says there’s still a little work left, but nothing that will cause closures and delays.

He expects the painter will face fines for taking too long, but the DOT won’t know for a while how much it will be.

As work wraps on the Memorial Bridge, expect delays next month on the Isabel Holmes Bridge. The DOT says it will close the bridge the night of Friday, June 1 for mechanical work. It will be closed all weekend and reopen early on Monday, June 4.

This Bridge is totally unsafe. What is with the grating on the bridge that jerks your car from side to side? No wonder a truck lost control and flipped on that bridge this week. Surely the state has to hold some liability for this VERY unsafe surface. Fixing this grating is far more important than paint.

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. UNREAL WHAT PEOPLE GET AWAY WITH NOW-A-DAYS.

I would suggest that next time the bridge needs painting that the state simply provide every resident and visitor with a paint brush or roller, and a small can of paint. That way they can paint the bridge as they cross, particularly when there is the inexplicable lane closure that occurs. It would have to get done faster than the contractor that took two years to finish (well, almost finish) the work.

>Most likely…not much in the way of fines. I wonder if the contractor was able to bill the State for cost overruns. Two years to paint a bridge! They could have torn it down and built a new one in less time.
