WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a day of remembrance for those we have loved and lost in our armed services.
“What we’re doing is recognizing the people that we love,” said Marine Corps veteran Jay Sparks. >
People, both young and old, packed the Battleship North Carolina this Memorial Day to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom.
“It means to celebrate everyone who died to pay the price,” said 8-year-old Connor Sneed.
Those who came to the service say you can always cook out but celebrating the holiday on a place where many lost their lives is a more suiting tribute.
“They need to see the people that have been there and done that,” said Sparks. “They can see the places where people died. The impact is so much greater.”
Folks say it’s simple – those who are risking their lives and who have paid the ultimate sacrifice deserve our gratitude and appreciation.
“Thank you all that served out there,” said Sneed. “Thank you a lot.”
Veterans from all arms of service who attended the ceremony were honored with their branch’s anthem and received rounds of applause from the crowd.
