WHITE LAKE, NC (WWAY) -- Police say a man drowned in White Lake. Investigators say a 20-year-old from Lumberton was on vacation, when he went into the lake Friday afternoon and did not return to shore.
"A young male was going in the water to retrieve a float that was being carried away by the wind," White Lake Fire Chief Dale Brennan said. "He was about 225 feet off the end of Goldston’s Pier, and I guess he got distressed and gave out and drowned."
Kim Morris says she has been coming to this quiet lake with her family for 40 years, and there have been too many deaths.
"I know it says swim at your own risk, no life guard on, but at the same time, no one wanting to get involved and you've got bystanders that can always help," she said.
Morris says an important lesson that we all learn in swim class is always to swim with someone; a lesson too many people here forget.
"It's sad to know that someone knew that he was going out after a float did not call for help, or maybe they did, but not go after him," Morris said.
Several law enforcement agencies are investigating. They have not yet released the man's name.
