WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With ten cases of rabies in New Hanover County already this year, the Sheriff’s Office Support Services Division gave out free rabies shots for pets Saturday.

Officers administered the free vaccine to dogs cats and also ferrets. The rabies clinic was the second of four free clinics in New Hanover County.

“The risk of an unvaccinated animal contracting the rabies virus is that the animal does not recover from the rabies virus,” Animal Services Officer Stephen Watson said.

The next free rabies clinic is scheduled for September 17 at UNCW. The fourth is slated for November 19 at the Hemenway Center in downtown Wilmington
