WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — During Monday night’s meeting, New Hanover County commissioners voted to start negotiating an agreement to re-open the county’s trash incinerator.

After a work session and public hearing, the board unanimously voted to negotiate the terms with Covanta Energy, a company that was selected by New Hanover County to potentially operate the Sustainable Energy Facilty.

To renovate the SEF, what used to be known as WASTEC, is estimated to cost about $65 million and take about 15 months to complete. County staff estimates a tipping fee of $93 per ton, an increase from $59 per ton. The extra cost would go help pay for the renovations and administration costs.

people continually denigrate CFPUA. The formation of CPFUA (consolidation of City and County) water and wastewater was one of the masterstrokes of genius that is sorely lacking around these parts. Despite what the majority may think, CFPUA WAS and IS the best solution, both at the time and now.

Most people are just mad ‘cuz they are paying more to fix things that BOTH the city and county were/are responsible for.

The City failed to maintain, the County just continued to build and add to the overcapacity problem.

Most every politician around here (both incumbents and wannabe’s) run on the CFPUA is evil platform. Strange how you never hear what their solution is…and when they do offer some idea, they are never called out on their populist BS.

The WASTEC issue is just another example of the County NOT performing preventative maintenance to a facility and running it into the dirt. This is a Fram oil filter commercial…you can pay me now, or you can pay me later! (Which do you think is cheaper?)

The county inflated the tax values several years ago now they still want the same or more because they can not stop spending and buying property that adds extra cost to the budget for upkeep. They are the ones that got us tied up with CFPUA.Say no to tax rate increase or vote them all out of office they need to cut the budget not increase tax rate.

Most of the problems have come from every time funding is needed to maintain facilities, services and etc. we have the usual conspiracy theorists and wannabe politicians scream cut, cut, cut. Now we get to pay for their nonsense of trying to bully commissioners and/or council members to get their way. Do we need the city government, no, one urban county government is plenty and could provide the same services for “less” due to no overlapping. Just a suggestion. Unfortunately too many people would lose their jobs.
