WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A former UNCW basketball player has been arrested on drug charges. New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Donte Morales after they say he sold marijuana at a Wilmington apartment complex last night, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say they busted Morales, 21, and Kyle Daniel Watts, 22, after a controlled purchase. Detectives searched Morales’s car and found a quarter pound of marijuana in the trunk. Detectives continued their investigation and seized an additional three pounds of high-grade marijuana at Morales’s home on the UNCW campus. They also found drug paraphernalia and measurement devices at Watts’s home.

Earlier this year, UNCW granted Morales permission to look into transferring to another school. Over two seasons he started 48 games for the Seahawks. He average more than seven points a game this past season.

Morales and Watts were booked on multiple felony charges. They are both in the New Hanover County Detention Facility.

  • They are great people for a FACT, and 40 years ago this would not have happened. That is a FACT. Marijuana is not a drug. Legalize it and stop wasting tax dollars.

This does wonders for him as a transfer huh?
Amazing even with a full scholarship, just a mess.
One HUGE turnover maybe for his career.

  • Monkey Junction says:

This was certainly disappointing to hear about Donte Morales. This is not a statement of the times though. This would have never happened 40 years ago because only whites were allowed to play basketball on college scholarships. Charlie Scott integrated UNC sports in 1966. Plus there were all kinds of scandals back then like CCNY shaving points and the disgrace that has been the Kentucky basketball program for the past 60 years. What Dante has been accused of is unfortunate but let’s not act like this is new or a sign of today’s society.

  • john doeeeey says:

a disgrace to his family? ha are you serious? I know both of these men and they are great guys and would drop anything they were doing if you needed help. stop judging them off of a dumb decision because someone else got caught and couldn’t man up so he set them up. they went and got it for him and he set them up. I’m sure you or even your kids smoke or have smoked pot and if not they drink which is just as bad. the fact you say he is a disgrace over a dumb decision is ridiculous.

  • Julia982379 says:

Donte is not a thug. Drug dealing is unacceptable but get real, all college kids smoke weed. It’s not a disgrace to anyone and Donte is a great person. He is not a low-life like you’re making him out to be.

I have supported UNCW athletics for years. I love the school and what it has meant to myself and two of my siblings. It is a statement of our times today, not 30 or 40 years ago, of the degradation and collapsing morale values our society has come to. A talented kid, given a free ride for a quality education and an opportunity to move up and be a contributing member of society, instead chooses to be a punk thug dope dealer. I have no sympathy for him. He is looking at serious time if these charges turn into convictions and I actually hope the book is thrown at him. You are a disgrace to this University Mr. Morales. A disgrace to your family. More importantly, in a couple of years when you sit in a prison cell, You will see that you are a bigger disgrace to yourself.

  • Stop the Hate says:

I have never read such ignorant comments on a news article. Get lives and stop spending all day over analyzing an unfortunate situation that has happened to these men. They need support and guidance not people to downgrade them!

  • WilmMan says:

This thug was giving full support with that free education he received. I have no sympathy for him what so ever. He is getting exactly what he deserves. He was given an opportunity most of us wish we had but never got and he just throws it down the drain. He is a waste

  • Big Daddy Cane says:

If you think whites were only allowed to play on a scholarship you are mistaken. It has become prevalent in the last 30 or 40. Charlie Scott was not the first to integrate college sports just the first at UNC in basketball. This is not about race. I said nothing about race. It is about the degradation of our society and the ones who are given an opportunity through a free education to succeed. not sell dope along the way. If you condone his actions you are part of the problem. Accused of, caught with three and a half pounds? Don’t even try to explain that one.

  • Guest15 says:

Stop calling it dope people please. We all now dope is only classified for the harder drugs like crack and meth. Weed is a harmless drug and should not be referred to as dope it makes him look even worst. I don’t know how many of you personally know him but I do and what ever you may think is wrong. He is a good dude even with the bad choices he has made. But, that is his problem to deal with now none of ours so get off his back and get on with your life.

The hate, judgemental and pessimistic attitudes over Donte and Kyle are negative and unnecessary. If the community knew these two young mens wonderful, beautiful, generous and loving hearts I believe they would maybe be less close minded and more willing to support Morales and Watts instead of shunning them.

  • scottieloc says:

Donte is a good person and so is Kyle Watts. Weed is no more harmuful than tobacco. People start out harmlessly selling a gram or two to their friends and before they know it, it turns to this. Both these kids are great kids and I know this to be true. They just got carried away. God bless them

  • Dub says:

Donte Morales is no thug. Wrong choices lead him down a path that was irreversible after a while. Morales is a talented, intelligent, and very compassionate man. So spend your time doing something more constructive than slandering his name and labeling him as a “thug.” marijuana at the end of the day is still a plant that can be grown from the ground with the oh so dangerous side effect of severe munches, red eyes, and some tummy rummbling laughter. Morales has lost many things in his life because of this incident already but he isn’t losing my support! There needs to be more positive people in this world.
