WASHINGTON (AP) - The office of U.S. Rep. Howard Coble says the veteran lawmaker is scheduled to undergo back surgery to correct a condition which his doctor says is impinging on his nerves and causing back, hip and leg pain.
A statement from Coble's office Wednesday said the surgery will be performed Thursday in Greensboro.
Dr. Jeffery Jenkins says Coble is suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis. Jenkins describes it as a narrowing of the fourth and fifth vertebrae, leading to his pain.
The doctor calls it a common spine condition, and he expects Coble to make a complete recovery following his surgery.
Coble said he scheduled his surgery to avoid as little lost time at work as possible. It's expected that Coble will spend up to four days in the hospital.
