WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A Wilmington optometrist and her husband face several drug charges after police say they found a marijuana "grow" operation in the couple's basement.

WPD officers received a call of a breaking and entering in progress at 2306 Market Street at about 2:08 p.m. yesterday. When officers arrived, the resident, Dr. Sheila Cooper, told them she came home for lunch and found a back window open. When she entered the house, she heard noise upstairs so she went outside and called police.

Officers searched the house for any possible intruders. During the search, they found what appeared to be a marijuana growing operation in the basement. WPD's Narcotics Enforcement Unit was notified, and detectives secured a search warrant for the house.

During their search, detectives say they recovered approximately one pound of dried and processed marijuana in various states of preparation, as well as an indoor grow tent, lights, ventilation, storage containers and smoking devices. They also recovered two long guns.

Sheila Cassioli Cooper, who an online search shows is an optometrist affiliated with Lenscrafters at Independence Mall, and her husband, John Bailey Owen Cooper were both charged with the following possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, manufacture of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

John Cooper is also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.

Dr. Cooper was not at her office this afternoon when WWAY called for comment, and we were told she would not be back today. She has not yet returned our call.

Sheila Cooper was placed under $5,000 secured bond, while John Cooper's bond was set at $10,000. Both posted bond and were released.

Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call WPD's Narcotics Enforcement Unit at (910) 343-3689.

yall are terrible

"Dr. Cooper was not at her office this afternoon when WWAY called for comment, and we were told she would not be back today. She has not yet returned our call." Why'd you even call for a comment? what business is it of WWAY what that woman does in her own home. Don't even say it because she's a doctor because i know a PRACTICING orthopedic suergon who smokes medical pot in denver legally because he has constant back pain from when his helicopter was shot down. Call him for a "comment", better yet, knock on his door and ask him to explain. (that'll be brief).Focus on news, its an election year, our economy sucks, its going to do nothing but worsen, half the high school kids in this town are taking pain pills and MDMA before they're 16, thats news, that a problem, that needs to be fixed.Leave the nice doctor alone, I don't even smoke pot, nor am i a fan of those that do. but what a waste of police labor and newspaper space.

How about this

It seems as thought the majority of people are missing the point of this news article.

how about this

Whats your point of view regarding this article?

Man I can't believe we are

Man I can't believe we are still charging and then incarsirating people for weed. As a former LEO I can tell you I'd much rather deal with somebody smoking some weed than a drunk anyday.

Legalize this stuff already???

And the award

For the Dumb Crook News Award goes to Sheila Cooper. If you ever call the police for a B&E in progress , it is a reasonable assumption they will search your entire property for your protection.I am sure ole Johnny boy had a few words for Sweet Pea when they got home .How this plays out is John is already a felon and serves minimal time. The soon to be ex-doctor and convicted felon gets probation and an unemployment check.

Glaucoma dude. Glaucoma.

Legalize this stuff already. If the drug dealers who produce alcohol can do so legally and get away with the enormous problems that poison causes society, people should be able to produce and consume some weed. Revise these antiquated laws. I'd be fine with a ban on alcohol but legalization of pot.

This is not....

This is not your mother's pot dude.

An this year's Darwin award

An this year's Darwin award recipients are...

This reminds me of the Bellamy Elementary teacher and janitor who were stopped for dead tags eight years ago and arrested for possession of crack cocaine.

duuhhh

Must have been for glaucoma treatments.

Easy job

What an easy job when the criminals call the police to come to them.

LOL

stupid is as stupid does!
