BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) — The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations against Boiling Spring Lakes Police Chief Emmett Ballree.

SBI spokeswoman Noelle Talley confirmed the investigation, which she said was requested by a Superior Court judge and the District Attorney. Talley did not comment on the nature of the investigation and allegations.

David says he cannot disclose the nature of the investigation, but he says he received a complaint of Ballree committing an alleged criminal act.

David says he requested the investigation with Superior Court Judge Ola Lewis last month to see if a criminal investigation is needed. Since then he says the SBI has been moving rapidly.

Town Manager Jeff Repp says SBI investigators have been conducting interviews for the past two weeks.

“I was a little surprised, but since it came from outside the city organization, we didn’t really have any knowledge of it,” Repp said.

When we called for comment, a woman who answered the phone at the BSL Police Department said Ballree is out today.

This is not the first time Ballree has been investigated. In 2008, a Training and Standards committee cleared Ballree after he was accused of misusing a town credit card to buy fuel for his personal car when he was police chief in Mount Olive.

The facts are, you are RIGHT, Chief White did the background investigation but, you are WRONG, as Chief White did not make the recommendation. Ballree is 100% on the platter of Dave Lewis and Joan Kinney. Depending upon how you feel about the hire those two get 100% of the credit or 100% of the blame!

  • Guestyup says:

This is now a criminal matter and not a political one. Dummy, the NC SBI does not get involved in politics. They are hear at the request of the DA and a Superior Court Judge! So as far as Ballree and his job goes, ‘tic, tic, tic’.

  • BOMB says:

    TIC, TOC, TIC………
    …KA-BOOM!
    TIME RAN OUT!

  • Guestou812 says:

    Tic-toc, Tic-toc, Tic-toc.

I KEEP HEARING ABOUT ALL THE GOOD BALLREE HAS DONE FOR THIS COMMUNITY. GIVE ME A FEW EXAMPLES! I CAN’T COME UP WITH ANY.
LOSER LEDBETTER WAS RUNNING THE SHOW WHILE BALLREE USED HIS CITY VEHICLE TO SCHLEP HIS FAMILY ALL OVER THE COUNTY. HE’S BEEN ‘OFF BASE’ MORE THAN HE’S BEEN ON. KINNEY AND LEWIS HIRED THE GUY WHEN THEY HAD BETTER CANDIDATES. ASK YOURSELF WHY THEY DID THAT. AND WHY DID HE IMMEDIATELY DO WHATEVER HE WANTED WITHOUT FEAR OF ACTION FROM THEM. WELL, KINNEY, LEWIS, TROSCIANC ARE GONE. CASTER LOST THE MAYORS RACE. TWO OR THREE PEOPLE DIDN’T MAKE THAT HAPPEN. A CITY
OF CITIZENS TIRED OF BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF MADE IT HAPPEN. IF BALLREE DID WRONG, THEN HE’LL BE GONE TOO. MAYBE THEN THIS CITY CAN MOVING FORWARD AND START HAVING GOOD NEWS PRINTED ABOUT IT.

  • Guest1313 says:

Didn’t former police chief and now mayor, White do the background and make the recommendation to the town to hire this guy?

  • Guest from Southport says:

I don’t get how people don’t even acknowledge all the good Chief Ballree has done for the community. This is a stupid investigation and anyone who says otherwise is ignorant or just down for playing politics.
Certain “people” have been out to get this guy ever since the first day he was hired. Once the investigation is over and he STILL has his job and the facts come out, alot of people will be bitting their tounges.
It’s amazing how bitter people in this world are and jealous they can be. Chief Ballree has not down any wrong doing. Judge Lewis had no right to even call the SBI in the first place. So there. THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE!

  • Guestou812 says:

Good???? You have got to be joking. Cruising around 7 days a week in the city owned car on personal business, including out of the city is not good. Yep, runs his kids up and down the streets also because they have no drivers licence and there is only one family car that the wife takes to work. Good???? He has not done a thing good for this community. All he has done is disgrace any decent LEO anywhere!

  • Guest442 says:

This hire was a Dave Lewis and Joan Kinney deal all the way. Word on the street, yes former chief did do the background but NO, he did NOT make a recomendation to hire. That would be a good question for the news to ask the former chief and present mayor so the answer to that question could be out and on the record one way or the other.

  • Guest from Southport says:

Take your caps off fist off all…It sounds like you have way too much of a grudge to even validate an even evaluation of the man’s job. He’s Innocent!

  • Guest from bsl says:

No it’s always been political just think of what else the SPI could be investigating instead of this. If they get call they have to report. tax payers dollars are going to this just remember that! It’s a shame the big wigs in bsl should pick on someone else.

  • GuestGo figure! says:

The “bad apple” was one of the best! The only reason he was put out of the force was because he wouldn’t lie for the mayor! And why is the “chief” still working under a criminal investigation when the “bad apple” was suspended for less and the chief lied about everything to save his own butt? Yes, there are still some good cops here, but I doubt if there are any good people on the staff in city hall!! No good commissioners! Not familiar with the new City Manager yet, but I am hoping he is worth something!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guest 919 says:

What evidence do you have to say he’s not honest? He’s gonna be cleared of this. Get your foot out of your mouth.

  • Gene says:

So, how about you? If he gets a charge against him and gets canned are you going to come back into this blog and say how you were wrong??? No, I am sure you will not. You will be back in here saying it was a rail road job by the state against this poor guy that every where he goes he claims, “someone is out to get me”.

  • GuestHUH? says:

OK, it is now your turn again. You are and were wrong. He no longer has his job. You had plenty to say, “When he still has his job and is cleared of this what are you gonna say then?” on your original post. Now that you are proven wrong and he is held accountable, what have you got to say now? The safe be is, you have nothing to say now!

  • NCborn says:

Paulette is Ballree’s family. Surprise surprise.

  • Guest 919 says:

When he still has his job and is cleared of this what are you gonna say then? Nothing…your bitter and you can’t help it we know you have a personal vendetta against the chief as well as some others. But it’s ok when he retires a respected civil servant you will find someone else to pick on because that’s all your good for.

  • Common Sense 102 says:

Congratulations on sounding, and confirming, that you are by far the least intelligent person writing (well attempting to write as this run on contains none of the necessary punctuation) on this blog. My backyard (which is spelled properly as one word), is perfectly fine and in order. I don’t have the State Bureau of Investigations interviewing me.

I am not sure of what part of the above statement “‘[I] have no idea about”. If you mean to correct me regarding factual information, for example all information between “Congrats” and “city”, then you my dear friend need to check your facts. Lewis was had no business running a city and Kinney had no business getting him promoted. What were these two thinking when they hired Balree?

The meat of this article is that Ballree is being investigated. He had problems at his previous job and they seemed to have followed him to BSL. We don’t know what, probably will never know what for, but the SBI is looking into it after recommendations from a Superior Court Judge and the District Attorney. This wasn’t called in by Ma and Pop down the road.

  • GuestOU812 says:

Ballree under investigation yet, one more time! Google the guy and Mount Olive, NC. Always in trouble and always someone elses fault. What a crumb. Thank you city for hiring such a loser. Now the hens have come home to roost and we citizens are going to pay for it.

  • Guestunc says:

You have a bitter taste in your mouth but why. Is there something wrong? He’s done alot of good in this town and these alligations are probaly not true. So stuff it.

  • Guest OU813 says:

Guest OU812, you sound like Jeremiah Wright, that’s funny. you do realize that people are innocent until proven guilty, don’t you? you people commenting here act like he just “hit and ran” your dogs on the way to the doughnut shop with complete malice. if i didn’t know any better, it sounds as though you all were on the short list for his job and are displaying your sour grapes. public record shows that Ballree was found innocent of the charges in Mt. Olive and to the person with an IQ above 47, that means he didn’t do it. anyone can be accused of anything these days and allegations alone are not justification for these character assassinations by people who live in a world of speculation and innuendo. if this man did it, he will pay the price. but until then, he laid his hand upon a Bible swearing an oath to take a bullet, if necessary, for the very ingrates crucifying him on this page and he deserves the same respect everyone of you demand for yourselves. moral of this story, wait until the facts are known before tying the knot for the electronic lynching.

  • Das Weibstück says:

Are there ANY honest police around these parts?

  • Guest--- says:

Jon David constant stirring is making being a police officer very dangerous. You know dangerous criminals do watch the news and see this stuff. If I was a cop in any of those 3 counties I would go to a magistrate and file a mental evaluation request for his constant sociopathic lack of consequences behavior.

  • GuestSAVEBSL says:

The BSL Police Dept., with the exception of Ballree, is a fine and honorable group of people. One bad apple was already let go and it looks like the chief may be next. Be that as it may, the rest of the force is top notch. I would put my life in their hands in a New York minute. So yes, there are honest policemen around these parts!

  • Guest 919 says:

Yeah Chief Ballree is you will see

  • Guest442 says:

When you ask the question, “is it you?”, you suggest just only one wittness. Wrong!

  • Guest442 says:

1st, you need to get your facts straight. In the hearing it was found not enough probable cause to pursue that matter further. That is a far, far stretch away from being found innocent, which he was not and, anyone with an IQ over 47 would know that! Be that as it may, that was then and this is now. The problem Ballree has now is simple. Too many eyewitnesses! When the hammer comes down, remember you read it here first!

  • Guestunc says:

Eyewitnesses? You don’t even know what he’s under investigation for and if you do you are feeling bitter towards him or his family for other reasons. Get a life. He’s innocent.

  • Guest442 says:

It is really very simple. When there are that many eyewitnesses some of them start talking and the word gets out. That’s how! BTW, If your head was not in the ground you would already know this yourself. On the otherhand you may already know and are just trying to be part of the cover up.

  • Guest 840 says:

Were you one of the eyewitnesses??? If so I want to know what drugs you were taking to have such a vision!

  • Common Sense 101 says:

Congrats Former Mayor Kinney, Former City Manager David Lewis, and Comm Caster for hiring someone with such a grandiose background to begin with! I would love to assume that the salary is modest and benefits are decent, therefore creating a large candidate pool and you chose Ballree? I wonder where Miss Thuer is to complain about previous jobs Ballree has left “in shambles”? I bet she is out paying her taxes and screaming fire in the back of movie theaters.

I ponder why Balree was “out today” when supposedly he is under investigation not by the city, not Training and Standards, but the State Bureau of Investigation. Shouldn’t he try to “save face” (what little he has left) and just quit and move out of town? Mount Olive chased him out of town by allegations he was later cleared on, what do we have to do here in BSL to make him leave?

Nothing like Repp’s first order of business is handling a police chief that is under investigation. This will be a true test of him right from the word GO! We can only hope the BOC did a better choice on picking him then when they picked David Lewis. “Oh, you know accounting? Would you like to run a city?”

  • sharon p me says:

Clean up your own back yard you don’t have any idea what you are talking about so shut up

  • Paulette says:

you all make me sick and are gonna bust hell wide open

  • GuestGoober says:

    Break into Dunkin Doughnuts?

  • GuestU2 says:

Well it can’t be breaking in to Dunkin Donuts because that would be way too much like work!

  • Guest CommonTater says:

he looks guilty of is “killin” one too many double-cheeseburgers!!!

  • Yak says:

Is a man innocent until proven guilty or are allegations alone enough to bring out the character assassinations? I believe he was cleared of the previous charges which means his tenure in Mt Olive is irrelevant. None of you know what this is about yet so i’d wait until you do before crucifying a man whose put his hand on a Bible to protect the people including the ingrates throwing stones.

  • Guest69 says:

So you want to blame the DA? Excuse me, it is not the DA that is under investigation. Also, you seem to forget Judge Ola Lewis also called for this investigation. Get you head out of your butt!
