BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Blueberries are the fruit of summertime and the inspiration behind one of the biggest festivals in southeastern North Carolina.

Tens of thousands of folks came from all over the place to celebrate the Ninth Annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival. Families and fruit take over the traditional southern square in downtown Burgaw. The festival promotes the local economy, and blueberries are bought by the bushel.

“You can’t just go anywhere and get blueberries,” festival volunteer Greg Garriott said. “They only grow in certain climates, certain areas. There are a lot of local growers here, and it’s a chance to support the local economy and really enjoy something that a lot of people in The South love to eat.”

Besides the sweet treats, lots of folks come out to get a glimpse of antique cars as well.

This was my first time attending the Blueberry Festival, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I loved the antique shopping and the good food. I also enjoyed seeing the old cars, which brought back good memories. The raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries I purchased are delicious! The only flaw was a lack of seating. When you have purchases, a camera, a purse, and a bad knee, some more seating would have been a wonderful addition. Maybe something to think about next year??
