READ MORE:

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - A Cary attorney is resigning from his seat on the governing body of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system.

The resignation of Brent D. Barringer from the UNC Board of Governors was announced Thursday, one day after it became effective.

In a letter to the board, Barringer cited the need to devote more time to family, business, and professional responsibilities. He also said he wanted to give more time to his wife's campaign for the North Carolina Senate.

Barringer was first elected to the board in 2003 and served on a number of committees. He was in the midst of a third four-year term which was to run through June 30, 2015.

The state House of Representatives will appoint a successor to serve out the remainder of Barringer's term.
