WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Surf was up at Wrightsville Beach this morning, as the annual Rip My Shred Stick, a nationwide surfing tour, made its first North Carolina stop.

The goal is to share the gift of surfing by giving young kids the opportunity to learn and compete alongside the pros. No prior experience was necessary to catch a wave at the event.

“We love it here,” event manager Phil Bannan said. “We can’t complain. Everyone down at the beach, smiling. It’s great to see kids get their first waves, or if they surfed before get better waves than they’ve ever gotten before. It’s a great community event.”

The surfing tour will make three more stops in North Carolina and a total of 30 stops nationwide ending in San Diego.
