WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says an off-duty deputy’s vigilance helped catch a couple of would-be thieves.

The Sheriff’s Office says the sergeant noticed a pick-up truck behind Tri-County Properties at 2608 North College Road around 10 a.m. Wednesday. The sergeant saw two men by the truck and notified the patrol supervisor.

A short time later, two deputies arrived and saw the two men coming out of the woods behind the business dropping a sledgehammer and crowbar on the ground.

The deputies detained Charles Curtis Dozier, 53, and Larry Derrick McMannen, 56, until detectives arrived. They found the footprints of both men’s boots matched footprints from bricks inside the house, where a fireplace insert had been stolen. Detectives found it in the bed of the men’s truck.

Both men were charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of burglary tools. They are in the New Hanover County Jail under $10,000 bond.
