WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As six people charged in connection with the murder of Chinese delivery driver Zhen Bo Liu await trial, his family is left wondering how this could happen.

Monday, WWAY met with his widow, Yin Mei Fu, who flew from China, and his son, Yu Ziu, and daughter-in-law who traveled from Canada. They say Zhen had planned to move back home in a few months.

“I try not to think at that moment what happened to him. I really can’t imagine somebody so cold blooded,” daughter-in-law Wei Wei Liu, who spoke on behalf of his widow and son.

60-year-old Zhen Bo Liu had moved to Wilmington five years ago. He was working to save up enough money to retire with his wife in China. His family says he only had a few months left.

“He already mailed his stuff back home. His clothes and a lot of stuff and he said he would enjoy retirement after,” Wei Wei Liu said.

Liu died on the job delivering an order for China King. After shooting Liu twice, police say his suspected killers sat down to eat the $48 meal just a short distance away from where police found his body slumped in a car.

Investigators say Mustafaa Friend, 15, shot Liu in the foot and Cornell Dwayne Haugabook Jr., 20, shot him in the face. Both are charged with murder.

As they plan to take Liu’s body back home, his widow hopes to see justice brought to those involved.

“We wanted to know what happened to his killers,” Wei Wei said. “We want to see them deserve what they did.”

As the three deal with funeral arrangements in Wilmington, the rest of Liu’s family in China still has no idea what happened.

“We haven’t really told them we saw his body yet, but they are still praying for him,” Wei Wei said. “They are still hoping it’s not him. Hopefully he can rest in peace.”

The family is setting up a trust fund for his widow to offset funeral and travel expenses. Donations can be mailed or delivered to the offices of Alley Register McEachern at 701 N. 4th Street in Wilmington, or at any local Wells Fargo branch. Any checks should be made payable to “Alley Register McEachern Trust Account FBO Zhen Bo Liu.”

There are funeral expenses and unexpected travel expenses that are expected to amount to about $10,000, which the family hopes to offset by donations.

  • The Main Man says:

Cruel and unusual punishment should be used on these FOOLS. What the — is wrong with those Crack smoking morons. They should be tortured and shown what pain is.

  • Susank says:

To have reached this state of depravity didn’t happen in an instant: this has been a slow-moving storm, one that some must have known was coming. The entire community needs to rally, to be looking after one another and make sure parents are raising their kids to be good citizens. In many cases it’s the mothers raising the children, very often on their own and having to work excessive hours just to get by. Girls think twice before you choose to have a baby; think long and hard about the partners you choose and whether they’ll be stepping up as father figures. And if you do end up a single mother, it is your DUTY to raise your child with lots of love and encouragement, good values, and close supervision. Men step up. Be a dad: be a mentor to someone who doesn’t have a dad. There’s a lot of inequity out there but you only hurt yourself when you make the decision to “hang” with no goals, no direction. I wear my “Mom hat” at all times and will step in when I see something that’s not right. We all need to do that, for our safety as well as for a better community. Churches are a great source of support, spiritually as well as otherwise.

  • 1981duke says:

We might disagree on some core issues, not this one.
Thanks WWAY on beind so pro-active on this core community issue.
I have lived in 6-7 different cities, can not remember something as “horrible’ for this family.
Let us hope justice is served, however the family must “suffer” for no reason at all..
    No sentence is too harsh/rigid.

  • GuestSammy says:

What about the judge that let this guy out?
White has pending charges of larceny, having a weapon on school property, drug possession, discharging a firearm in the city limits and breaking and entering, according to court records.

Should that be public so we can vote him out?

  • Rick Wilson says:

The victims family should be the ones to choose which form of execution these defendants receive. I hope nobody starts with the rehabilitation rant, you can not rehabilitate soulless animals. It is way past time for the parents and families to start caring before they become murderers. If all the love and care they claim was applied from birth, along with discipline, I think tragedies such as this would become less frequent.

  • Guest415 says:

Undisciplined children, abused weapon, thug culture and merciless heart – This is how American is going downhill.

  • ChefnSurf says:

Looks like there just might be some light at the end of the tunnel after all.

    Again, thank you.

  • Lauren Secero says:

To the family of this man,my deepest heartfelt sympathy,Wilmington has lost a fine hardworking citizen. I feel ashamed of our beautiful city for it will be forever tarnished my this senseless unforgiveable act. Your family can never ever replace your cherished one. I refuse to loose hope in our youth today. This horrendous crime does not represent my 18 yearold or 15 year old son and his friends,I have raised them with a tight hold, being a single mother myself. Youth need guidance and morales from birth. Please if you are reading this share this story with your children, involve them in the comunity, church sports and most of all family. There is hope for tomorrow but it takes a VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. Much love and Peace

  • Guest123456789 says:

What a sad story. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family. Why is this not being covered by the major news outlets? I can guess why but will keep my rants to myself. And why are people calling the murderers “kids” and “people”? They do not even deserve to be called animals, that would be an insult to animals.

  • Guestsnc says:

From today’s Star News: As of Wednesday afternoon, the family had received $3,482 from people across the community and beyond.

If you are able please send in a donation for this family; they need not only signed cards and murmured condolences — they have asked for financial support.

We as a community have a right to be outraged by this murder. Channeling our outrage into financial support could be one step toward healing for this family and for Wilmington.

    Please donate $$ if possible!

  • guest 4404 says:

the boys are mentally deranged animals. how can you expect their parents to contribute when they couldn’t even teach them basic regard for human life? Absolutely disgusting and revolting, and I dare not even print what I am REALLY thinking about these “people” other than they are a waste of life and our money that will be spent prosecuting and incarcerating them. My deepest prayers for the victim’s family

  • AnnaGades says:

Allow me, please, a documented Mexican, to express my outrage at Mr. Liu’s heinous murder.

Someone mentioned in an earlier comment that Asians are being attacked by young black males in Oakland, San Francisco, and NYC.

As a volunteer worker in the Mexican community, I have heard many stories about blacks attacking hard-working Mexicans and robbing them. There have been several instances of blacks forcing their way into Mexican’s homes and robbing them, especially in the rural areas of Bladen, Robeson, Columbus, and Brunswick counties.

Also, there are numerous instances of black males robbing Asian stores. They seem to target them.

Are hate crimes going on here? I think hatred is part of it.

My condolences to Mr. Liu’s widow and son. Such a sad story.

And as someone has already said, this brutal murder by SIX young men cannot be treated casually. The full brunt of the law must come down hard on them. JUSTICE FOR ZHEN BO LIU!

  • Guest824 says:

    Well said!

  • Enough says:

Please stop right there if you think expressing your “outrage” is going to buy Mexicans some kind of relief from racism in this country, or help their perception change overnight. Black/Brown relations in California are at a all time low, with Mexican gangs attacking both blacks, asians, and whites in the state also. Crime is an outcry of the social economic conditions that our country must still overcome not a racial characteristic attributed to one race.

  • Susank says:

My prayers as well. God help us to find the goodness in this world, that those who feel lost will not turn to harmful, hurtful behaviors but will instead seek out love, warmth and positive role models.

  • Guest857 says:

I pray that we can show the Liu family that the vast majority of people in Wilmington love hard working, decent family people. I also pray that our court system can weed out these hateful thugs that have infested our good city.

  • Guest343 says:

You should go make that check request in person. Be sure to come back here and let us know how you made out.

  • Peyton Garrett says:

Perhaps a nice big fat check should be forwarded from the local and state chapters of the NAACP to defray some of the costs. There will be a loud mouth so called “Rev” down here to promote a pardon from the lame duck Governor, which by the way does pardon these heathen criminals, be burned in effigy. Instead of your hand out demanding, perhaps this racist organization should do the opposite “Rev”, why don’t you write a check for this man and his family????????

  • Guest08 says:

A family is grieving the lost of a love one and all you can speak of is hatred and racist, the Governor. The community is outrage about the murder and how it unfolded. The naacp didn’t killed Mr.liu the young men that have been arrested were involved. We need to stop worrying about who will donate and who won’t.Maybe we will see you in wells fargo making a donation.

  • Please says:

    I agree!

These kids may monetarily have “nothing”, but I bet they have a sweet tricked out Cadillac Escalade in their Mama’s driveway and some expendive “digs” that we can pawn or sell! I work hard everyday to support my family and end up supporting these thugs who drive nicer cars than me and have free health care…now that’s crazy! And I don’t even want to hear that I’m racist; if you’re ignorant enough to believe that just look at the FACTS!

  • cintrek says:

The donations should come first from the kids that killed this man then next it needs to come from their parents. Make those kids work their butts off, sell everything they own then don’t let them see the light of day again just like what they did to this delivery man that was just doing his job to support his family. Sad how some can be so evil.

That’s just it. These boys probably don’t have anything. Most (I’m not including all) children these days don’t have a high school education, a job, a moral sense of value, and a respect for life. The street life is their way of life, which has NOTHING to offer. The parents of these should pay at least 50% of the expenses. It would be nice for them to have to pay some of the expenses. If the death penalty is not applied, they should be able to work while they are in jail for the rest of their lives and the little bit of change they do make be sent to the trust fund.

It would be a nice law to come into effect: The assailants families should have to pay 50% of the victims funeral arrangements or any accured costs.

  • 1981duke says:

That needs to be paid via parties charged with the Crime.

  • Guest2020 says:

Something you and I can agree on.

  • WMcNeill says:

Thank you, WWAY, for informing us of this trust fund. I shall certainly make a donation tomorrow morning.

I do not think Wilmington has comprehended fully the vicious barbarity of this unimaginable crime. To murder someone who has delivered food to you, and then to sit down and eat the food! This is unspeakable evil. Words cannot adequately express the depravity of these six young men. Time to heat up the electric chairs again.

My sincere sympathies with the family, friends, and colleagues.

  • 1981duke says:

You are right Sir,this is criminal, malicious, unruly, unthinkable, and has zero place or tolerance in ANY area or society, and right here in our backyard.
I hope we do not accept this as a “casual” thing. This has no place in any civilized society and as a resident of our area I am embarrassed this happened here,it makes our little City look HORRIBLE at best.
    God Bless this family.

  • unc22 says:

Thank you WWAY for keeping everyone informed on this situation. I feel the stupid, ignorant kids and their loved ones should be ordered to pay the family’ exspenses and funeral. These stupid, ignorant kids learnt this behavior from someone. They all should be on death row.

My deepest condolences to the family and co workers.

This pack of animals shot Mr Liu, ate dinner, then came back and pillifered the car. So, 15 or 20 minutes?

Question 1 – why didnt the neighbors call the cops?
