WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Sen. Richard Burr was in Wrightsville Beach Sunday night to receive the NC Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award.
Although he was there to be honored, he had much more than that on his mind. One of the issues at the top of the list: the elections in November.
“I believe it’s time for a different path,” the Republican said. “The president has gone out and said, ‘If you vote for me, you’re going to vote for exactly the same that you’ve seen for three and a half years.’ I don’t think that’s what America wants.”
Although he doesn’t expect to be the Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. Burr is passionate about change. Burr says the economy needs to be rejuvenated.
“America needs comprehensive tax reform,” he said. “We need to simplify, reduce and broaden the tax base. We need to put Americans back in charge of their money. We need a smaller, less expensive government. If we’ll do that, we’ll attract capital from around the world.”
Not only did he have something to say about the national economy, but he also talked about what can be done to improve the state economy.
“We produce the second largest pool of graduates of higher education annually of any state in the country other than California,” Burr said. “It means that we are the magnet for capital investment. We’ve just got to preach that word.”
Burr also touched on the local economy, noting that it is great to see Wilmington booming with tourism in the summer.
