WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — On Wednesday night we featured championship day at the Fred Lynch Invitational Basketball Tournament in New Hanover County. Sanderson emerged the tournament champion by defeating Hoke County in the gold bracket finals 62-50. Hoggard beat Pender in the silver bracket finals 48-34. OMAHA,NE (WWAY) — Cari Blalock’s third attempt this week at the US Olympic Trials came up a bit short, but Blalock is having a great week in the pool nonetheless. Blalock finished in 24th place in the 200 IM. She’s slated to swim in the 200 Butterfly on Thursday. The top 3 competitors in each event advance to the London Olympics to represent the USA.

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) – Exhibition game at Buck Hardee Field. Wilmington 20 Lexington 11. Game was called after the top of the 8th. Both squads were apparently ready to call it the day in a game that started at 11am.

WILMINGTON,NC (Hammerheads news release) — The Wilmington Hammerheads have officially announced that Corey Hertzog, whom has been on loan from the New York Red Bulls, will remain with the team through their championship run.

Hertzog was originally on loan to the Hammerheads until the end of June prior to returning to the Red Bulls. “This is a great opportunity for me,” states Hertzog. “It’s an opportunity to play more games and score more goals.”

Hertzog’s debut appearance with the Hammerheads was in Richmond on May 26 at City Stadium. Since then, the forward has appeared in all six Hammerheads matches to date; scoring 4 goals and contributing 2 assists.

Hertzog trails fellow Hammerheads forward Andriy Budnyy whom holds the lead scoring position with 6 goals this season. Wilmington will host Los Angeles on Saturday at Legion Stadium.
