NC Senators postpone consideration climate change bill

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina Senators have decided to postpone consideration of a state-sponsored science panel's warning of rising sea levels until July 2016, calling instead for more studies.

An amended version of the much-debated bill to control how North Carolina prepares for climate change along its coast passed the Senate Monday night 40-1.

The measure now moves to the House.

The new version puts a temporary moratorium on the state adopting any rate of sea level change for the purpose of regulations. The science panel warned sea levels could rise by more than three feet by 2100 and threaten more than 2,000 square miles of coastal land, but a development group says the rates are much lower.

The bill will affect where coastal developments are allowed and affect insurance rates on the coast.
